The Legend of Zelda live-action movie still

Exciting Legend Of Zelda Film Has Started Official Production

Nintendo found huge box office success with 2023โ€™s โ€œThe Super Mario Bros. Movie,โ€ and they are hoping to strike gold again with a new movie based on The Legend of Zelda series, set for release in 2027. It is unknown if the movie will be based on a specific game or feature a brand new story, but new photos show that it has begun production.

About the โ€œLegend of Zeldaโ€ Movie

The movie will star Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, and is set for release on May 7, 2027. A tweet shared by Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto stated the following:

โ€œThis is Miyamoto. We have begun full-scale filming of the live-action โ€˜Legend of Zeldaโ€™ movie in the beautiful natural surroundings with Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Filming is progressing smoothly, so we hope you will continue to support us. The film is scheduled for release in theaters on May 7, 2027. Please wait a little longer.โ€

Three New Images From the Movie

The tweet also included three new images from the filming. The first one shows Link and Zelda kneeling in a grassy, mountainous field. Link is wearing his familiar green tunic, while Zelda is armed with a bow and arrows, and wearing a blue tunic similar to what she wears in the beloved game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Perhaps there will be some Breath of the Wild elements in the movie.

The other two images are zoomed-in pictures of Link and Zeldaโ€™s faces. Link has a bit of a harder facial expression than he usually wears in the games, but Zelda looks very similar to how she does in the games. While itโ€™s of course too early to tell if Bragason and Ainsworth will do the characters justice, the images look like they physically resemble their game counterparts, which is a good start.

What Other Nintendo Movies Are In Development?

โ€œThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie,โ€ the sequel to โ€œThe Super Mario Bros. Movie,โ€ is set for release in April of 2026. Supposedly, there is also a Donkey Kong movie coming at some point. Nintendo has indicated that they want to make many more movies based on their games, so we will probably be seeing lots of beloved Nintendo franchises on the big screen in the coming years. The “Mario” and “Legend of Zelda” movies are likely only the beginning.
