HBO Sets Game of Thrones Spinoff Schedule Through 2028
HBO is doubling down on its most valuable fantasy franchise, announcing a multi-year plan that will keep viewers immersed in the world of Westeros. The network has officially scheduled new seasons of its Game of Thrones spinoffs to be released every year through 2028, ensuring a steady stream of dragons, political intrigue, and brutal sword fights for fans.
The ambitious schedule includes early renewals for both the established hit House of the Dragon and the upcoming prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, demonstrating HBO’s deep commitment to expanding George R.R. Martin’s universe.
Roadmap For The Game of Thrones Spin-Offs
The first new entry in this lineup, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its premiere on January 18, 2026. Season 2 is slated to follow in 2027. Based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, the series follows the adventures of a humble knight, Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey), and his young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who harbors a world-changing secret. Set between the timelines of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, the show will adopt a half-hour episode format, a departure from the franchise’s traditional hour-long structure.
Meanwhile, the critically acclaimed House of the Dragon also received an early renewal. The highly anticipated third season, set to return in the summer of 2026, has been teased by showrunner Ryan Condal as “goddamn massive.” It will plunge viewers into the heart of the Targaryen civil war, a bloody conflict that is expected to ignite with Rhaenyra and her dragons descending on King’s Landing. Following that, a fourth season of the series is scheduled to debut in 2028.
Expanding a Richly Imagined Universe
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama series and films, expressed excitement about the long-term plan. “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe,” she said in a statement. “Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be.”
Author George R.R. Martin himself has had mixed reactions to the adaptations of his work, occasionally expressing concerns over deviations from his source material in House of the Dragon. However, he has offered high praise for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms after viewing the entire first season, signaling a promising start for the new series. With this new, consistent release schedule, HBO is ensuring that the fire of the Seven Kingdoms will continue to burn brightly on screen for years to come.
