Sony has announced a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in a new Midnight Black color, but the console is confirmed for Japan only so far. The Midnight Black PS5 launches Nov. 19, according to Gematsu, with no official word on whether it will reach other regions.

What Sony Announced For The Midnight Black PS5 Japan Release

The console is a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition finished in Midnight Black, set for release in Japan on Nov. 19, Gematsu reported. The system ships with its language locked to Japanese and will only work with PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan, according to the outlet.

Pricing in Japan is set at 55,000 yen, tax included, Gematsu reported. Sony will also release a matching Midnight Black standalone disc drive on the same day for 11,980 yen, tax included.

Pre-orders for both the console and the disc drive begin Oct. 20 at PlayStation retailers and online stores in Japan, according to the report.

What It Means For Fans Outside Japan

Nothing in Sony’s announcement addresses a release beyond Japan. The region lock built into the console, tied to Japanese-registered PlayStation Network accounts, effectively limits the hardware to buyers in that market for now.

Fans elsewhere hoping for a Midnight Black PS5 of their own will need to wait for any separate announcement from Sony, since none has been reported as of this story.

Background On PlayStation’s Physical Media Plans

The Midnight Black reveal comes as Sony moves forward with a broader shift away from physical games. The company has said it plans to end physical game disc production in January 2028.

“PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards will only be sold as digital versions from PlayStation Store and other retailers,” Sony said, according to Gematsu. That timeline means the new Midnight Black disc drive will still have more than a year of life supporting physical releases before that cutoff takes effect. Total Apex Entertainment has covered the ownership questions raised by that shift in PlayStation discs: 2028 exit raises powerful ownership fears.

What’s Next

Pre-orders for the Midnight Black PS5 and its matching disc drive open Oct. 20 in Japan, ahead of the Nov. 19 launch. Sony has not announced pricing, a release date or availability for the hardware in any other region.
