Yes! June has arrived, which means we can officially begin Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and boy, is it needed.
Have you noticed the increase in addiction and suicide among boys and men? It’s alarming as there’s a pandemic among the male population, impacting their mental health specifically.
So, if we care about men’s health and well-being, then we must continue spreading men’s mental health awareness worldwide.
The Weight of Stigmas on a Man’s Shoulder
Unfortunately, our fight against stigmas rages on, even with the subtle progression to normalize the conversation around men’s mental health.
What’s worse about these stigmas is that they’re working on many men, as most still refuse to reach out or even accept help for their struggles.
Whether it’s shame from having to buy pills at the pharmacy or opening up to a stranger about their darkest traumas on a comfy couch, men have reasons why they refuse to seek help as they don’t want to be considered weak.
How to Solve the Problem
Showing support to men about their mental health can be challenging, either because of their own pride or someone else’s judgment.
Either way, men still need more support. It’ll be hard work but there are ways to encourage men, including the ones in your life, to seek help for their needs to better their quality of life.
Don’t Force the Conversation
Be aware of boundaries. Just recognizing symptoms of mental health doesn’t give you the right to broaden the topic. Like in any relationship, you must gain a man’s trust first.
Think about it, you wouldn’t take too kindly to a stranger throwing you into the ocean without even considering if you were a good swimmer, right? No, you’d call the cops.
The Summer of Men’s Mental Health Awareness
That’s why the creation of a men’s mental health month is a genius move as the topic instantly becomes a conversation starter, not just among men, but society itself.
So, why June specifically, you ask? Well, besides the hot summer vibes and the popular man-centered event, Father’s Day, you could come up with many different reasons why June was the perfect month to dedicate Men’s mental health.
Wise Words to Remember
Make an effort to be kind to people. You can sum up all the support you could give men with those two words. Before starting any conversation, we must grow empathy and strengthen it from burnout from here on.
What’s more, you don’t have to talk to communicate. You can spread awareness to, and most importantly build upon, men’s mental health awareness through your actions, as that’s louder, and better than words anyway.
So, go out to eat, watch a movie, or find a hobby you can enjoy with a man. Here are some wise words, all it takes to build a house is a single brick.
