Grammys Red Carpet Turns Powerful as Stars Stand Together Wearing “Ice Out” Pins
Sunday night, February 1, the Grammys red carpet was full of accessories. From blinged-out nails, statement handbags, and big hats, the one accessory that stood out is the small button worn by celebrities like Kehlani and Finneas O’Connell, and even Justin and Hailey Bieber wore the pin as a silent protest at this year’s award show.
Celebrity Protest: “Ice Out” Pins
On music’s biggest night, some celebrities took time from celebrating their musical achievements to make a statement. The small accessory is a white button pin about the size of a quarter that reads “Ice Out” in black.
The accessory is used to support the protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the outrage people have expressed over the killing of citizens like Alex Pretti and the brutal treatment involving ICE agents.
The “Ice Out” pins were first spotted at the Golden Globes awards early this year, along with “Be Good” pins. According to Teen Vogue, the “Be Good” pins were created to remind citizens,
“Organizers say the phrase “Be Good” is meant to serve as a reminder of “what it means to be good to one another in the face of such horror — to be a good citizen, neighbor, friend, ally, and human,” per the press release.”
Kehlani Makes Political Spotlight
Even if they did not give a formal statement, dozens of celebrities joined together to protest. But some artists took it a step further and used their platforms and voices to express their political views.
Kehlani, again, is one singer who took every moment to shine a light on her thoughts about the current protest against ICE and the controversy surrounding the law enforcement group. When the “Folded” singer accepted her Grammy award, she spoke up from her pin and even on the red carpet.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, in an interview on the red carpet, Kehlani expressed why she wore the “Ice Out” pin. First, she said, “I really wanted to say f*** ICE.” Then, the “Out the Window” artist continued,
“It was “important” to wear the “ICE OUT” pin “because tonight is obviously a big visibility night, and anybody that has an opportunity to spread the word and get the message out that obviously change needs to happen in this country in so many ways.”
Fans Can Join “Ice Out”
