Jujutsu Kaisen, a hit manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami that spawned an even more popular anime, is ending. As of this article’s release, Jujutsu Kaisen, which has been going strong since 2018, only has two more chapters left to finish its story. Chapter 269 was just released this past weekend, and describing its feedback as mixed would be an understatement, to say the least. This article contains spoilers about the entire series; therefore, please take this as a fair warning.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s End Announcement
It was only a couple of weeks ago that it was announced that this series would reach its end. Gege Akutami has communicated in many previous interviews that the series would end sometime by the end of 2023 or 2024. Initially, he underestimated how long the series would last, but many times in interviews he shared that he does not want the series to go on for a long run. In comparison to some of his modern contemporaries in the manga space, such as One Piece or My Hero Academia, it’s understandable to see why Akutami wants to have a short but sweet tenure as a manga artist.
Needless to say, when Shonen Jump announced that Jujutsu Kaisen would end in five chapters, the fight between Yuji and Sukuna had not concluded. It was obvious that it was reaching the climax, but many fans still felt like there was more to be seen. The final five chapters have been under heavy scrutiny from fans because Akutami has much heavy lifting to do here. He has to wrap up a story that has been in the works since 2018. Not only does he have to make the ending satisfying, but he also has dozens and dozens of plot threads to finish and conclude.
Chapter 269 Stumbles
This recent chapter wasn’t necessarily awful; it was just a bit puzzling. In this chapter, there is a ton of reflective dialogue from the main cast about the ending. More specifically, readers gain more information about the defeat of Ryomen Sukuna and how much it cost the cast to accomplish this. A big mystery at the end of the last chapter was what would happen to Yuta. He inserted himself into Gojo’s body to use his power to fight Sukuna. Many people thought this would kill Yuta. In a twist, Rika, Yuta’s monstrous protector, actually recovered Yuta’s body and allowed him to return, with only a scar.
Some fans felt this was a poor ending to Yuta since many believed he should have died. That’s a fair point. Many characters have died in Jujutsu Kaisen, and the ending would have been even more tragic if Yuta was one of them. However, that’s not the most significant problem of this chapter. The most puzzling part was how the main cast barely mourns the loss of their sensei, friend, and idol, Gojo Satoru. Gojo Satoru died in the manga about a year ago. This completely upended the entire Jujutsu Kaisen community. So many fans were genuinely at a loss for words as they would be if a real person died. It changed everything.
The Series Concludes
That was a turning point for the series. There have been many, but Gojo was the mascot of Jujutsu Kaisen. He is honestly one of the most popular modern anime characters, and his death sent shockwaves through the anime community. Therefore, the main cast is talking about how they regret not fighting a certain way, instead of mourning over their dead sensei was very shocking. It’s safe to say that it left an unpleasant taste in many readers’ mouths.
Final Thoughts
As for the rest of the series? Well, as of writing, Akutami only has two chapters left. That’s about 60-70 pages of manga real estate to wrap up one of the biggest new Shonen series the world has seen. Usually, the final chapter of a manga is a bit longer, but who knows what Akutami will do. All one can hope for is that the penultimate and final chapters are satisfyingly written, and tie up the series in a compelling way.
