ID. Tiguan Replaces ID.4: Volkswagen has officially announced that the ID. Tiguan will replace the ID.4 as the automaker’s next electric SUV, with sales set to begin in early 2027 across Germany and other European markets. The new model also takes over for the European-market ID.5, consolidating two existing electric crossovers into a single nameplate.
The announcement marks a shift in both naming and design philosophy for Volkswagen’s electric lineup, moving away from the ID.4’s softer crossover styling toward a shape that more closely resembles a traditional SUV.
ID. Tiguan Replaces ID.4: What Volkswagen Announced
Volkswagen confirmed that the ID. Tiguan carries a more upright, muscular design than the ID.4, with sharper body lines and sculpted sheet metal. The exterior also brings back classic pull-style door handles in place of the flush or touch-based handles seen on earlier ID models.
Inside, Volkswagen redesigned the cabin to emphasize material quality and simpler controls, dropping the touch-capacitive panels that drew criticism on earlier ID vehicles. The dashboard includes a 10.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.0-inch central infotainment screen and an optional 12.0-inch front passenger display.
Volkswagen also built in a few nods to its history. A “Retro” mode can switch the digital gauges to a recreation of the blue-and-red instrument look from the Golf IV, and the central screen can display a virtual garage showing six classic Volkswagen models: the Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, Tiguan I, Race Touareg and Beetle.
What It Means For Fans And Buyers
For European buyers, the ID. Tiguan replacing the ID.4 means a single electric SUV now covers the ground previously split between the ID.4 and ID.5. Volkswagen says the model will offer up to 373 miles (600 kilometers) of WLTP range depending on configuration, giving shoppers a range-topping option well beyond what the outgoing ID.4 offered in many trims.
Towing capacity will vary by battery size. The 58.0-kWh version can tow up to 3,968 pounds (1,800 kg), while the 77.0-kWh version can tow up to 4,409 pounds (2,000 kg), according to Volkswagen’s specifications reported by Motor1.
Volkswagen will offer the ID. Tiguan in Europe with three powertrain options and four trim levels: Trend, Life, Style and R-Line. It remains unclear whether all three powertrains will reach the United States, and Volkswagen has not detailed US availability, specifications or pricing.
Background And Context
The ID. Tiguan borrows its name from Volkswagen’s long-running gasoline Tiguan, but the two will coexist rather than one replacing the other. Volkswagen confirmed the gasoline, diesel and hybrid versions of the conventional Tiguan will continue to be sold alongside the new electric ID. Tiguan in Europe.
The naming choice puts the new EV in the same family as one of Volkswagen’s best-selling SUV lines, a move that differs from the standalone “ID.” branding strategy Volkswagen used for the ID.4 and ID.5. Volkswagen’s broader EV push in North America has also included manufacturing commitments, such as the Chattanooga plant’s 2027 production plans for the Atlas lineup.
What’s Next
Pre-orders for the ID. Tiguan open Oct. 13 in Germany and several other European countries. Volkswagen set European starting prices at €42,695, which converts to roughly $48,000 at current exchange rates. The automaker has not announced a specific launch date or pricing for the US market, where the ID.4 currently remains on sale.
