Kyoto Animation

Kyoto Animation news and releases, renowned for meticulous character-driven storytelling.

Total Apex Take

Kyoto Animation's output has never fully returned to its pre-2019 pace, and that slower rhythm has become its own quiet statement about what the studio values now.

The 2019 arson attack killed 36 people and devastated a studio already known for an unusually patient, in-house training pipeline, and in the years since, KyoAni has rebuilt deliberately rather than quickly — continuing the "Violet Evergarden" story through film, expanding "Tsurune," and leaning on veteran staff to keep its meticulous, hand-drawn house style intact rather than outsourcing to recover lost time. It's a studio that still releases less than its anime-industry peers, by design.

We think that restraint is the most honest tribute KyoAni could pay to what it lost — a refusal to chase MAPPA-style volume at the cost of the craftsmanship that made the studio matter in the first place. What we're watching is whether the current generation of KyoAni animators, many trained post-tragedy, can carry that identity forward once the staff who survived 2019 eventually retire.

Kyoto Animation, often shortened to KyoAni, is a Japanese animation studio founded in 1981 known for exceptionally detailed character animation and emotionally grounded storytelling. The studio has produced numerous acclaimed series and films, often adapted from light novels, and is closely associated with a distinct, meticulous visual style.

Kyoto Animation suffered a devastating arson attack on one of its studio buildings in 2019, which killed dozens of staff members and drew an outpouring of global support from fans and the wider animation industry; the studio has continued producing new work in the years since.
