Fast & Furious

Fast & Furious movies and spin-offs, Universal's long-running action franchise.

Total Apex Take

A franchise that outgrew its own premise years ago — and is now, finally, trying to land the plane.

Nobody has believed these are street-racing movies since roughly “Fast Five,” and that's fine — the heist-blockbuster pivot is the best creative decision this series ever made. What's harder to defend is the sprawl: spin-offs, de-aged flashbacks, characters who die and come back, a timeline that only superfans can diagram from memory.

Our take is that the planned finale is the right move at the right time, but the real tell will be whether Vin Diesel and the writers can give Dom's story an actual ending instead of another mid-credits tease for a spin-off. The franchise's strength was always the cast chemistry, not the physics, and a finale lives or dies on whether it remembers that.

Worth following for the stunt work alone — these are still some of the only big-budget action movies prioritizing practical execution over pure CG spectacle, even as the plots get sillier.

About Fast & Furious

Fast & Furious is Universal Pictures' long-running action franchise that began in 2001 as a street-racing drama and evolved over two decades into a globe-trotting heist-action series built around an improbably skilled found family of drivers and operatives. Starring Vin Diesel in the lead role across most installments, the series has become one of the highest-grossing action franchises in film history.

The franchise has expanded beyond its mainline numbered entries into spin-off films such as Hobbs & Shaw, reflecting Universal's strategy of building out the Fast universe across multiple interconnected releases.

What started as a street-racing thriller in 2001 gradually shifted into a globe-trotting heist and espionage series starting with 2011's Fast Five, which introduced Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs and reoriented the franchise around elaborate action set pieces. The saga crossed a combined $7 billion worldwide at the box office shortly after 2023's Fast X, and has spun off into the Hobbs & Shaw film as well as an adult-animated Netflix series.
