HBO Max Name Triumphant Return, Excellent Choice

HBO Max logo

It has only been 2 years since HBO Max became Max, but Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that the name will revert this summer. Name changes are such a curious thing in the world of marketing.

HBO Max

Warner Bros. Discovery made the announcement during their Upfront presentation on May 14. The rebranding is coming after the streaming network has increased profitability over the last two years. The service has focused on the quality of content instead of the quantity of content. The press release says:

Returning the HBO brand into HBO Max will further drive the service forward and amplify the uniqueness that subscribers can expect from the offering. It is also a testament to WBD’s willingness to keep boldly iterating its strategy and approach – leaning heavily on consumer data and insights – to best position itself for success.

They’re planning to continue to focus on the things that make the streaming service unique and appealing to adults and families.

Wrapping it Up

Changing the name back makes sense since the Max part of the name seems to be a reference to Cinemax when HBO had the stronger branding all along. Those of us who know it as the old name probably still refer to it by that name anyway. There’s a lot of content releases expected to come to the service this year, and we’re still watching “The Last of Us.” We’re hoping they keep up the momentum!
