Monsterverse fans rejoice because Godzilla and Kong are returning to the big screen! These iconic titans have clashed and teamed up in past cinematic features. And they are about to do so again in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Over the weekend, a teaser trailer for this movie debuted on YouTube and excited everyone. It didn’t showcase any crucial information, but it did announce the film was in production. But with little to go on, what could we expect in this upcoming blockbuster?
The Monsterverse’s Two Kings
Before coming together in an Avengers-style event, solo movies featured these famous kaiju. The King of the Monsters arrived first in 2014 to exterminate two apocalyptic pests. Following his debut came the ape alongside some massive lore-building for the Monsterverse. The Monster King and other iconic kaiju returned in a sequel that left fans awestruck. It also gave way for the epic clash between these titanic protagonists.
The gargantuan monsters officially met in the Monsterverse’s first and highly anticipated crossover versus film. They first approached each other as rivals before joining to combat a new foe. It also silenced the debate over which of them is more powerful. Afterward, the two met again in the 2024 sequel, The New Empire. The two contended with a deranged primate who commanded an ice-breathing titan. But it appears those previous meetings were training for what will happen next.
New Godzilla and Kong Team-up Coming
Warner Bros. recently released a teaser for the new Monsterverse movie, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. This sneak peek opens at Monarch, the research organization that monitors Earth’s titans/kaiju. The focus moves to a computer playing a recording from the group’s helpline. Additional audio chimes in, reporting that numerous titans have emerged across the planet. The monitor displays a severe emergency alert before cutting to the film title. It ends with the words “Now in production” and The Monster King roaring.
There’s currently little information regarding Supernova since its production announcement was days ago. What we know is that Grant Sputore will replace Adam Wingard as director. And the studio brought on David Callaham to construct the storyline. We also know Kaitlyn Dever from The Last of Us is playing a lead role. Celebrities like Dan Stevens, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and the legendary Sam Neill will join her.
As for Supernova‘s plot, we only know that our two kings will join forces again. There’s no word on what they’ll face, but fans have some ideas. They believe the threat comes from or is associated with space due to the title. The titular foe from 1994’s Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla is a popular choice right now. But there’s the chance Legendary Pictures will decide to create something original to avoid copyrights. We’ll have to wait to see what route the studio goes with.
Final Thoughts
The Godzilla x Kong: Supernova teaser didn’t reveal much, but it’s excited me nonetheless! I’ve loved the Monsterverse ever since the first movie back in 2014. And I’ve been a massive fan of The King of Monsters since childhood. It’ll be intriguing to see what enemy our two favorite titans take on this time. I will be surprised if it’s an abomination from outer space like other Toho characters. We’ll find out once this monster flick rampages into theaters March 26, 2027.
