Godzilla is one of the most iconic fictional characters ever to exist. Since appearing on the big screen decades ago, it’s won the hearts of countless people. They’ve enjoyed the monster king protecting Earth from evil or destroying the world. These thrilling adventures appear in movies and other forms of entertainment media. Coming is a brand-new comic series brought by IDW and Toho’s extended partnership. What can we expect in the new story featuring the King of the Monsters?
IGN FanFest Brings Monster News
During IGN ‘s 2025 Fan Fest, IGN staff performed interviews with industry icons. Executive Producer Daemon Hatfield conducted one with renowned comic writer Tim Seeley. Seeley is the famous co-creator of the Hack/Slash and Revival series. He’s also known for his work on the Batman: Eternal and Grayson books from DC. Hatfield brought him on to elaborate on his involvement with IDW’s upcoming Godzilla comic series.
Hatfield and Seeley Talk Godzilla
The Godzilla-centric conversation between the two participants takes place over web cameras. When Hatfield asks about the story’s background, Seeley reveals they are starting from scratch. There will be no ties to any of the previous continuities except for the original movie. Seeley elaborates it’ll allow them to try new ideas and directions. He also reveals the overall story will span over three different titles. Together, they’ll create something new but use aspects from past tales to keep it familiar.
Hatfield mentions how Godzilla will play the destroyer rather than a defender. When asked to elaborate, Seeley replies, “Oh, I think we used the defender as well.” He adds that the renowned kaiju defends the planet, not who’s not it. Seeley further explains that he views Godzilla as “Earth’s vengeance on us” for our stupidity. He even reveals how the kaiju’s new blank eyes and green-colored energy represent this idea. The design also emphasizes Seeley’s view of Godzilla as a “terrifying force of Nature.”
Three New Kaiju-Sized Stories
Of course, Hatfield and Seeley spoke mainly about the new Godzilla comic series by IDW. The book, entitled Godzilla, reimagines the origins of the monster king and introduces super-powered humans. It begins in 1954 when humans experiment with a mysterious energy called Kai-Sei. Their meddling leads to His Majesty and other giant monsters awakening and attacking humanity. The conflicts last for decades, leading to the creation of the kaiju-fighting team G-Force. This ensemble meets Jacen, a Kai-Sei-powered teenager determined to kill Godzilla.
Two other series, Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone and Starship Godzilla, further explore this continuity. Escape the Deadzone showcases an American area reduced to a monster-filled wasteland. It appeared because humans tried to recreate the circumstances that birthed the King of Monsters. Starship features a character abducted by space pirates on the run from Xiliens. The protagonist is supposedly a beloved franchise individual, but their identity is unclear. Fans of the cosmic side of the franchise are sure to find this series appealing.
Final Thoughts
These three upcoming comic series sound intriguing and exciting to any die-hard fan. I wouldn’t mind seeing an alternate reality branching from the original ’54 movie. The other two stories also have their appeal with their wasteland and space settings. I even like how these three distinct tales appeal to different fans. It shows the publisher thinks about every demographic, leaving no one out. The first issue of Godzilla hits stores on July 23 of this year.
