GLP-1 retail changes: Retailers rethink sizing and returns

Retailers like David's Bridal and DXL adapt to GLP-1 retail changes as customer bodies shift fast, rewriting return policies and sizing strategies.

As millions of Americans take GLP-1 medications for weight loss, retailers are rewriting return policies, resizing store shelves and renaming the trend itself. Circana now calls it the “body transformation economy,” tracking how households change their buying habits during the first year someone in the home starts a GLP-1 medication.

The numbers behind the shift are striking. Use of GLP-1 drugs is projected to grow from $42.6 billion in 2024 to $137 billion by 2030, according to Coresight Research data. Gallup’s September research found 11% of U.S. adults currently take a GLP-1 for weight loss, up from just 3% two years earlier.

Dean Neiger, co-founder and CEO of Maeva, a direct-to-consumer metabolic wellness company, told Retail Dive the scale of the change is unusual. “I don’t think in our lifetime we’re going to see many behavioral shifts like we are with GLP-1s,” Neiger said. “When you look at the changes that GLP-1s are pushing through, it’s really unbelievable.”

How Retailers Are Adapting To GLP-1 Retail Changes

Bridal retailer David’s Bridal has already changed how it handles orders as customers on GLP-1 medications reshape their buying patterns. CEO Kelly Cook told Retail Dive that brides who delayed buying a dress while losing weight were suddenly rushing to order one. “This is somebody who’s waited because they are on GLP-1s or on a fitness journey, and now they’re scrambling trying to get their dress very, very quickly,” Cook said.

David’s Bridal responded with what it calls the Fit Guarantee, a policy built around brides whose weight may still be changing. “Regardless of where you are on a health journey, or you’re taking the GLP-1, or whatever your choice is, what’s the one thing that we can do to serve her relative to this issue that takes the issue completely off the table so she doesn’t have to worry?” Cook said.

Men’s apparel chain DXL has felt a similar jolt. The retailer estimates as much as 25% of its customer base now uses GLP-1 medications, then-CEO Harvey Kanter told analysts this spring. Kanter said shoppers are delaying purchases while their weight fluctuates, and customers are moving in multiple sizing directions at once rather than steadily sizing down.

Why It’s Taking Off

The shift traces back to how quickly these drugs can change a person’s body and routine. Neiger told Retail Dive that retailers are reconfiguring physical stores and stocking end caps with products built specifically for GLP-1 users, while food chains roll out protein-centric items to match changing diets. Some retailers have also adopted digital tools to update pricing and product placement in response to shifting consumer needs.

Kanter said DXL underestimated how deep the impact would run. “We didn’t think it was going to be impacting the business as much at the level we think today it is,” he told analysts, according to Retail Dive. He added that the sizing “volatility” comes from customers moving around in sizes, not just trending in one direction.

The Numbers

Circana’s research on the body transformation economy found that households with someone taking GLP-1 medications purchase more of several specific categories during the first year of use, including:

  • Active shorts
  • Jeans
  • Casual pants
  • Bras
  • Dresses

David’s Bridal saw its own measurable shift after launching the Fit Guarantee. Cook told Retail Dive that within a week of the rollout, the typical ordering timeline “retracted and went back to normal, prior to GLP-1s.” She said the window first went back two weeks, then three weeks, before settling into normal ordering patterns, with alterations now handled once a bride’s weight stabilizes.

What’s Next

Retailers across apparel and food are still adjusting merchandising, sizing strategies and return policies as GLP-1 adoption keeps climbing toward the 2030 spending figures Coresight projects. The shift mirrors changes in other retail categories as consumer priorities evolve. David’s Bridal and DXL executives have described their changes as responses to behavior already happening in stores, not predictions, and more retailers are expected to detail their own adjustments as GLP-1 use continues to grow, according to Retail Dive.
