Team Secret Whales did what many did not expect. They defeated Top Esports and knocked the LPL second seed out of MSI. They will now face LYON, who, on paper, should be an easier matchup. LYON showed they can match the best teams in the world. However, they lost the pivotal fights that led them to the Lower Bracket. Will TSW keep their streak going?

One Win and One Loss

Both teams have won one and lost one game at MSI. TSW started with a loss against Hanwha Life Esports, but then followed that up by knocking Top Esports out. LYON, on the other hand, won their first series 3-0 before falling at the hands of Bilibili Gaming for the same scoreline.

Featured Matchup

Pun Versus Dhokla

Pun has been exceptional so far for TSW. He nearly carried them over the line in game two against Hanwha Life Esports. He then followed up that series by winning lane against ZUIAN and dominating on his comfort picks. Dhokla has not reached the levels we have seen from him in previous international events. His laning phase is lacking, and he makes mistakes in team fights. If Pun can get the better of Dhokla, TSW might have the advantage.

TSW On the Rise

After defeating Top Esports, TSW is on a high. It was Vietnam’s first win over an LPL or LCK team in a best-of-five series. They rose to the occasion and took advantage of a weakened Top Esports roster. They must do the same against LYON. While the LCS first seed showed they can scrap with a top team, they are not infallible. TSW must continue to play without fear and take the fight to LYON. If LYON turtle into their shell, they will need to find ways to break them open. LYON showed more willingness to fight against Bilibili Gaming. However, against a less imposing opposition, they may choose to revert to comfort.

LYON Needing to Kill the Nexus

LYON did almost everything correctly in their series against Bilibili Gaming. While they made some errors, they always corrected them. They kept fighting back against Bilibili Gaming, making them uncomfortable. They were only missing the killer instinct in the final teamfight to win the games. LYON should have a better time working around the teamfights in this series. TSW is more of an early and mid-game-focused team, allowing LYON to flex their late-game muscles. They won the pivotal fights against FURIA, but can they do it again versus TSW?

Prediction

LYON 2-3 Team Secret Whales

Before the tournament started, the edge would have gone to LYON. However, after seeing their weaknesses and TSW’s strengths, the Vietnamese team has the edge. They also have the momentum on their side, having beaten an LPL team. Locking Pun down will be crucial for LYON, but Dhokla has yet to show he is up to the task. Inspired has visited the top lane a couple of times in the early game. He will need to do that again to neutralize Pun. The series could go either way, and any result will not come as a surprise. Hopefully we get five games between these two teams.

Top Four Awaits

The winner of the series will advance to the next round of MSI. They will earn their top four spot in the tournament. They will play against the winner of the T1 and G2 Esports series. The loser will see their run in Korea come to an end.
