Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Finally Reveals the Prototype

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 title card

Recently, I had the opportunity to play the latest chapter in the Poppy Playtime series, Chapter 5, and I can honestly say it’s better than I imagined. The expansion of lore, the different ways Mob Entertainment added new gameplay mechanics to the already established grab packs, and the horrifyingly intense atmosphere that kept me on my toes, Chapter 5 was an amazing addition to the series.

This chapter also introduced the Prototype, the big bad antagonist, who’s been teased throughout the whole series. So, who is the Prototype? What does he look like? And what kinds of things were revealed in Chapter 5 about the Prototype? Here’s my reaction to meeting the Prototype for the first time, and everything that happened during Poppy Playtime Chapter 5.

The Prototype Reveal

The Prototype is the main antagonist of the Poppy Playtime series. The Prototype has been a mysterious, looming figure throughout the series, teased through the lore you find in every chapter, and understood to have led the events during the Hour of Joy. This looming presence was recently revealed in Chapter 5, and fans of the series finally got a face to the name.

The reveal was as epic as we could’ve imagined. After arriving at Lily Lovebraids’ house and freeing Poppy and Kissy, who’ve been imprisoned there, we are then knocked unconscious and forced to participate in Lily’s tea party, which we helped set up for her. Lily had been teasing that a special guest would be arriving, which we suspected was the Prototype, and that everything had to be perfect. Poppy and Kissy were also forced to participate, and this is when the Prototype appears.

The Prototype is a large cyborg that is built in combination with different mechanical parts. The top part of his body is made to look like a jester, with a porcelain mask on. The mask shows two large black eyes, and an unnaturally large mouth that is always ginning. He has spider-like mechanical legs, with three additional, retractable arms in the abdomen of his body: one of Mommy Long Legs, one of Kissy Missy, and the other Huggy Wuggy. He also has slim arms and claw-like hands, which have been teased since chapter 2.

The Mastermind Behind Everything

The face reveal of the Prototype finally put our imaginations to rest, wondering what this infamous figure would look like and what kind of monster we would be faced with. In Poppy Playtime Chapter 5, we find out that the Prototype is the soul of Oliver Ludwig, the eldest son of Elliot Ludwig, founder of Playtime Co. Oliver was actually an orphan living at Playcare, whom Elliot adopted, after which, Oliver was then turned into the Prototype, becoming the first person whose soul was transferred into an inanimate object.

It is revealed early on in the series that the Prototype led the events during the Hour of Joy and that all of the toys we’ve faced so far in the series are deathly afraid of him. The Prototype is definitely the mastermind behind everything and controls what’s left of Playtime Co. Every time we’ve defeated a boss in every chapter, the Prototype’s claw-like hand isn’t too far behind to collect the bodies. Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 also reveals the reasoning behind everything, including why the Prototype caused all of this mayhem.

Through lore expositions, we find out that Poppy was the real-life daughter of Elliot Ludwig, who died when she was a child. She became the main inspiration for Playtime Co.’s most popular toy and was also the reason behind the company’s secret experiments to transfer souls into children’s toys. Oliver figured out that his soul transfer was to resurrect Poppy. This causes him to feel extreme anger and hatred against humans, which led to the events of the Hour of Joy.

Oliver “Ollie” Ludwig

During chapter 3, we are aided by a toy telephone that says his name is Ollie and that Poppy sent him to help us escape Playcare. Ollie does help us throughout chapters 3 and 4; however, it is revealed that Ollie was actually the Prototype, disguising himself as his former identity. This reveal was an incredible way to tie into the previous chapters and explain to us why it seemed like the Prototype was always watching us, no matter where we were in the factory.

This also explains how the Prototype was able to destroy Safe Haven in chapter 4, when Poppy reveals her plan to destroy the Playtime Co. factory. The Prototype was able to figure out this plan and use Ollie’s voice to manipulate the player into exploding Safe Haven instead. The Prototype, disguising himself as Ollie, definitely was an amazing twist to the expansive story of Poppy Playtime. It shows us how intelligent the Prototype is, and just how interconnected he’s made himself within Playtime Co.

The ending of Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 left on a cliffhanger, so we have not seen the last of the Prototype. With the way things ended in this chapter, it looks as if the next one will bring things to a close in a final showdown with the Prototype. Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 is currently available to play only on Steam.
