First Stand 2026 Match Preview: G2 Must Defeat the Korean Giant
Gen.G Esports coasted their way to the Knockout Stage of First Stand. They not only won every game, but won both series in under 80 minutes. G2 Esports will have their backs against the wall. It would not be the first time they have been in this position in First Stand. However, Gen.G is on another level. Can G2 be the first team to defeat Gen.G in a series in 2026?
Recent Match History and Head-to-Head
Gen.G has played against G2 five times in their history. Gen.G was the victor in four out of the five series. The only time that G2 won was the 2020 World Championship Quarterfinal. Before G2 beat FearX, it was the last time an LEC team won a best-of-five series against LCK competition.
Featured Matchup
Canyon Versus SkewMond
SkewMond continues to improve on his time in G2. In international events last year, he was often a liability. He has improved in 2026. Even in their loss to Bilibili Gaming, he had a significant impact on the games. He now faces his sternest test at First Stand. Hands down, Canyon is the best jungler in 2026. He had a drop in form last year, but it seems like he has come out of it even better. SkewMond will need to topple his next test to give G2 a chance.
Winning Without Caps

Most of G2’s international success has come when Caps is at his best. However, he has had his worst international performances at First Stand. He was a liability against FearX. Despite that, G2 won 3-0, showing that the team is improving. Notably, Hans Sama and Labrov stepped up to take Caps place. The team’s improvement is a good sign, but that will not be enough today. If you want to beat the LCK Cup champions, everyone needs to fire on all cylinders.
Gen.G is head and shoulders above everyone at the tournament so far. Caps will need to improve to contend with Chovy. Caps is the type of player who can turn his performance around in an instant. We even saw him improve in the Zoe game, where he had more space to perform.
Who to Target?
The biggest problem when dealing with Gen.G is who to target. With other teams, there usually is an outlier. You want to target the best player to keep them quiet. G2 did that excellently against FearX. They shut down Diable, both in draft and on the rift. But now the problem comes: who on Gen.G do you shut down? You can try to focus Kiin, but that gives space to Chovy, Canyon, and Ruler to carry.
The further you go down the rabbit hole, the more problems that arise. There is no one player you can focus on, not in the draft, nor on the rift. G2 will need to be ready to shut down the entire Gen.G roster. That is a feat no team has accomplished in 2026.
Prediction

Gen.G Esports 3-0 G2 Esports
G2 found angles against BFX. They out-drafted them and exploited their lack of experience on the international stage. G2 will rarely have more international experience than an LCK first seed. But now, against Gen.G, they have the experience. They have won international tournaments. There does not seem to be enough holes for G2 to focus on winning a game against Gen.G, let alone winning the series.
Grand Final Awaits
The winner of today’s series will advance to the Grand Finals tomorrow. They will play against the winner of Bilibili Gaming and JD Gaming.
