An unfortunate development in Sony, the multi-billion dollar corporation, has recently announced their plans to raise prices on all consoles starting next week. The news comes from the Vice President of Global Marketing and Sony Interactive Entertainment, Isabelle Tomatis, who announced the price changes on the PlayStation blog. Here’s what she had to say about the price increase on all consoles, and what this would mean for consumers.

Sony Increases Price on All Consoles

It was announced yesterday that Sony would be raising prices on all consoles starting April 2, 2026. This would be the second time in less than a year that Sony would be raising prices on their consoles, an unfortunate development for the company and consumers alike. Last year, Sony raised prices on their consoles due to high inflation and uncertainty caused by U.S. tariffs. Now, with the current surging prices in AI memory chips, Sony once again faces economic uncertainty.

According to the Vice President of Global Marketing and Sony Interactive Entertainment, Isabelle Tomatis, the decision is based on mounting pressures in the global economic landscape. Prices for computer memory, or RAM, are expected to rise more than 50% this quarter, which is definitely affecting tech companies like Sony, Nvidia, and even Google.

Unfortunately, this will trickle down to the consumer level as well. Usually, console prices decrease over time, but this doesn’t seem to be the case now. When the PlayStation 5 was first released 6 years ago, the base price of the original console was $500. Now, the price has risen to $649.99 for the base console, an extreme jump considering how old the PlayStation 5 is now. However, it’s not surprising given the economic landscape of the global market. Here is what some consumers had to say about the price increase on Sony consoles:

“that’s why tentpole exclusives (platform enabler) titles are important, with console prices going up and not lowering over time like last generation, there needs to be a point of differenciation for people to buy playstation hardware” said Etifilio.

“I can only imagine how expensive the PS6 is going to be. Console prices going up multiple times since launch is completely unheard of!” wrote pain2itsmaximum.

“You guys are embarrassing. All you did this gen was close studios and increase the price on everything” wrote AngieK22.

A Word From Sony

The news was relayed on the official PlayStation blog site by Vice President of Global Marketing and Sony Interactive Entertainment, Isabelle Tomatis. Naturally, many people expressed discontent and anger over the company’s decision. In the post, Tomatis explains the company’s decision and breaks down the prices of all the consoles affected by the price change in different currencies. Here is the full post from the PlayStation blog website:
