First Stand 2026 Match Preview: A Classic International Matchup

The First Stand Logo, the first international event of the year

Bilibili Gaming and G2 Esports have faced off multiple times in international events. They will face off again at First Stand 2026. Overall, BLG has won more series recently. However, G2 got over their demons in the Esports World Cup last year. BLG should be the favorites for the series. Can G2 overcome the odds at First Stand a second time to beat the LPL champions?

Recent Match History and Head-to-Head

BLG and G2 have played six times in the past three years. Two of those series are best-of-five, three are best-of-three, and one was a best-of-one. G2 has won the previous two meetings, with their first best-of-three series or higher win being in the EWC. Before that, BLG won two best-of-three and best-of-five series, respectively.

Knight Versus Caps

Caps have been the hope of the West for some time. He was the best player for G2 against Team Secret Whales. His Ahri performance was exceptional. We gave him a 10 rating, the first 10 rating of the tournament. Both Caps and Knight earned our player of the series award. Their matchup will be key for both teams. The midlaner that outperforms will have a significant impact on the series result.

Shaky Versus Dominant Early Games

G2 often found themselves behind in gold in the early game. Their laning phases were not perfect, and that meant they had to recover in the mid-game. BLG had different results in their early games against FearX. Some of their leads resulted from FearX’s mistakes. Notably, Bin and Knight had the better of their opponents in their individual lanes. XUN’s pathing allowed his laners to play safely in isolation.

That leaves a worry for G2. BrokenBlade died twice solo to Pun in the early game, while Caps died once to Dire. If they have shaky lanes again, we could see BLG storm to early leads. Every time BLG had those leads against BFX, they had the upper hand. However, when BLG is behind or even with their opponents, they struggle to match up to FearX. G2 might not have as strong a mid-to-late game as FearX, but it is good enough to contend with BLG’s.

Have G2 Exercised Their Demons?

G2 have won three games in a row against BLG. Their EWC series victory was their first victory in five series. Right before that series, they lost to BLG 3-0 at the Mid-Season Invitational. If G2 can beat BLG tomorrow, they will prove they moved past their struggles. BLG might be one of the best teams at the tournament, but they are beatable. FearX proved yesterday that there are ways to beat the LPL first seed. If G2 wants to compete for the trophy, they must beat BLG. At the moment, Gen.G Esports is the best team in the tournament. If you can not beat BLG, it should be impossible to beat Gen.G Esports.

Bilibili Gaming 3-1 G2 Esports

G2’s performance against Team Secret Whales was not enough to consider them stronger than BLG. While they won 3-0, it was not a dominant victory. G2 could have lost every game, except for game one. BrokenBlade’s laning phase is a concern for this series. With Bin already showing dominance in the laning phase, he might have the edge over BrokenBlade. The G2 top laner died solo twice to Pun, a weaker top laner than Bin. Caps should hold up against Knight, but if BrokenBlade struggles, G2 could lose.

First Stand Impact

The winner of the series will qualify for the First Stand Knockout Stage as the first seed from Group A. They will play against the second seed from Group B. The loser will await in the final qualification match. They will face either FearX or Team Secret Whales in that series.
