With Netflix leading the charge of series adaptations from anime to video games, Assassin’s Creed is joining the lineup in a new series, and this time, we are headed to Ancient Rome. This setting has long been anticipated in the game series, with many fans in the community asking for an installment set in Rome. Though fans aren’t getting exactly what they want, it’s exciting to see something they have been wanting come to fruition. Here’s all we know about the Netflix adaptation of Assassin’s Creed.

We Are Going to Rome

In every Assassin’s Creed game, we explore a different culture in world history, specifically a particularly famous era in time. For instance, the first Assassin’s Creed game takes place during the Third Crusade in the Holy Land, we’ve explored Renaissance Italy in Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed 3 takes place during the American Revolution, Assassin’s Creed: Origins takes place in Ancient Egypt during Cleopatra’s reign, and so on.

Each game explores these cultures and celebrates them, as we, as players, explore, interact, and engage with the environment created by the dev team. One setting that many fans of the series have been wanting to explore is Ancient Rome. Even though the game franchise explored this setting in Brotherhood, that game takes place 1,000 years after the fall of the Roman Empire. Many reports suggest that the Netflix series will take place during the reign of Nero and will be an original story within the timeline of the game series.

About a week ago, Netflix and Ubisoft took to social media to confirm the setting and full cast of the Netflix adaptation of the series. Fans are pretty excited, as this will be an original story within the timeline of the game series, and it’ll be interesting to see how this story will develop when it releases.

Netflix and Ubisoft confirmed the setting and full cast of the Netflix adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, which will be set in Ancient Rome in 64 AD. If you know anything about this time period, 64 AD was the year that two-thirds of the city was destroyed by fire, a major event in Rome’s history whose cause remains unknown.

This was also during Emperor Nero’s reign, a cruel dictator who began the persecution of Christians in Ancient Rome. Nero is one of the most infamous Emperors in Roman history, especially during the last years of his reign, which caused much tension within the empire, leaving it on the brink of civil war. As one of the most turbulent times in Roman history, fans are excited to see how the production team will bring all of it to life, combined with the lore of the game series.

A release date for the adaptation has yet to be announced; however, it’s been confirmed that filming for the series has already begun in Italy. A 2027 release is expected, given the production time frame; however, it will be some time before Netflix or Ubisoft confirms the release date. Both Netflix and Ubisoft also announced the full cast of the series, as well as the executive producers involved in the project, and here’s the full list:
