This year has proven to be a year of some fun and big game releases, one being the release of the newest Assassin’s Creed game, Assassin’s Creed Hexe, expected to release this year; however, reportedly coming out late 2027. The game is still in development, and according to leaks, this Assassin’s Creed game will bring back one of the most iconic characters in the series: Ezio. Here are what the leaks say about Ezio’s Return in Assassin’s Creed Hexe.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe is Bringing Back a Fan-Favorite Character

According to the latest episode of the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, reporter Tom Henderson outlined new details about Assassin’s Creed Hexe. According to Henderson, Assassin’s Creed Hexe is now allegedly releasing in late 2027, the game will also revamp the series’ combat, with particular emphasis on acrobatic moves, and the final rumor indicates that fan-favorite character Ezio will be making his return to the series in this latest installment.

Henderson stated that fan-favorite character Ezio Auditore da Firenze was reportedly once planned to appear roughly halfway through the story to mentor the protagonist, Ella, in Assassin’s Creed Hexe. This has been a longtime rumor in the Assassin’s Creed community for a while now; however, whether or not this rumor still stands is pretty up in the air. Ezio’s return in this mainline installment complicates the timeline a bit.

The Holy Roman Empire existed from the Early Middle Ages until 1806, spanning more than 800 years. Ezio only lived until 1524 in Assassin’s Creed lore. The timeline doesn’t align with the game’s presumed setting, as witch trials in the Holy Roman Empire peaked between 1560 and 1630, which is after Ezio’s death. I do know that fans would love to see Ezio back in action in any capacity in this new game. Here is what Henderson said on the podcast, speaking on the fan-favorite characters’ return:

“I know that people are kind of put off by the fact that it’s a witch game. That is kind of the case to a certain degree. But then Ezio comes in — or he was planned to come in — halfway through the game, and kind of teach [Ella] the ways of the assassins and all that kind of stuff, and then probably leans more into a traditional Assassin’s Creed title”.

Who is Ezio?

Ezio first appeared in Assassin’s Creed II, and was later featured in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. According to his lore within the Assassin’s Creed universe, he was active in the early 1500s, serving as the Grand Master of the Roman Order, and while he returned to Rome in 1512 to settle down with Maria, thus resigning from the Brotherhood and naming Lodovico Ariosoto as his successor, he remained close with the order and continued to mentor new students.

Ezio played an important role in the games, especially having been the main protagonist in 3 mainline games in the series. He’s also become one of the most popular protagonists with fans of the series because of his character arc and the investment fans have in his lore. I would not be surprised if Ubisoft were to include Ezio in Assassin’s Creed Hexe, just for the fan service; however, I’d be curious to see how that would be executed, and still make the timelines make sense in the games.

The podcast also revealed other rumors about the game, especially concerning the release timeline for Assassin’s Creed Hexe. There’ve been speculations about the game releasing this year; however, with the recent announcement that the creative director for the game, Clint Hocking, has parted ways with Ubisoft, and has left the project just last week, Assassin’s Creed Hexe is rumored to be releasing late next year instead of this year. However, we won’t know for sure until Ubisoft’s next fiscal call in May.
