Father’s Day. Hello, everyone of all ages. There is a holiday that comes once a year that the entire civilized human race revolves around with anticipation. Some look upon it longingly, others grimly, a rare group with favor, where some see it as the day of doom. It’s Mother’s Day! Mother’s Day comes, and many things surround love, appreciation, care, and devotion. What comes after Mother’s Day? It is a holiday where every father has to remind their children what day it is. That’s right, Father’s Day.
Some don’t like last-minute Father’s Day gifts
Father’s Day is always celebrated on the third Sunday in June; this year, that date is June 16th. However, what is Father’s Day? Why do we celebrate it? Is it just because we just had Mother’s Day and don’t want to leave the old man out too much?
Many think Father’s Day is a holiday sponsored by cheese card companies, dollar store knockoffs, and every type of soap on a rope. The truth is Father’s Day is more than that. As in every fantastic moment for men, what makes it great is a great woman.
The kid who put this sign up is getting a car
You can look back to 1907 in West Virginia, where there was a mining disaster. A horrific accident claimed the lives of 361 men, and 250 of those who perished were fathers. After their deaths, it left over a thousand children without their fathers.
One of those children whose father passed was Grace Golden Clayton. She suggested that their local Methodist pastor hold a service of commemoration. Unfortunately, this was never observed as a recurring memorial event.
Another young daughter, Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington, thought that after Mother’s Day, Fathers should have a day of their own. She was the daughter of William Jackson Smart, who was a single parent with six children and a Civil War veteran.
There isn’t a single smile they didn’t get gifts
Her devotion, speeches, and petition eventually reached President Woodrow Wilson in June 1916. Sonora’s work still met resistance and didn’t come to fruition until 1924, when President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed it a national holiday.
Now that Father’s Day is coming this year, here are some gift ideas so you don’t have to wait until the late afternoon of June 16th to ask your father for some money. Then, get him whatever was in the checkout line after you purchase something for yourself with the money you borrowed, and bring him whatever you find for the rest of the change.
- Personal artwork. A father always loves it when their child takes a moment to make crafted artwork depicting them together. It could be drawn, glued, sculpted, or glued macaroni, as long as it shows you together and happy. You can’t lose with a signature and date.
- An activity that you can do together. Take the old man out for a treasure hunt. Have your family get together for a Cherokee prize-winning rendition of Talor Swift. It is a competition where everyone except the mother can only ask questions. (Don’t tell mom.) Any event or game you plan out, and he gets to spend one-on-one time with you.
- The last may be the best, but it’s a book of coupons he can use throughout the year. They could say free hugs or a fist bump. You might offer him a day where you get him his favorite drink or snack. They could include chores around the house—anything to help the old guy.
No matter what you do, as long as it comes from your heart and is thought out just for him, he will love it because, no matter what, what he really loves and wants is you.
