Quentin Tarantino & Sylvester Stallone Team Up for Bold New 1930s Gangster Series

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino & Sylvester Stallone Series Project

If you were thinking Quentin Tarantino was just going to ride off into the sunset after his supposed tenth and final feature film, you might want to adjust your expectations. Rumors are swirling, and they point to a massive pivot to the small screen. Yes! According to recent reports, Tarantino and Sylvester Stallone are joining forces for a brand-new wild television project. Yes, you read that correctly. The mastermind behind “Pulp Fiction” and the legendary Italian Stallion are reportedly co-directing a 1930s gangster series.

A Gritty 1930s Aesthetic Shot on Vintage Cameras

According to the initial scoop from TMZ, this untitled project is being developed as a six-part limited series set deep in the heart of the 1930s. The Great Depression era is ripe for the kind of pulpy, dialogue-heavy storytelling Tarantino thrives on. But in true Tarantino fashion, the commitment to the bit goes way beyond the script.

The series is reportedly going to be shot entirely in black and white. If that wasn’t enough to excite film nerds, production is allegedly planning to use actual, original 1930s cameras to capture the most authentic visual tone possible. Imagine the sheer cinematic texture. We are talking about a world heavily populated by ruthless gangsters, dazzling showgirls, underground boxing rings, and jazz-soaked music scenes. It already sounds like absolute visual poetry.

Will Sylvester Stallone Step in Front of the Camera?

Whenever you hear that Stallone is attached to a project involving mobsters and boxing, the immediate assumption is that he will be throwing punches or calling the shots on screen. However, sources claim Stallone is attached strictly for his directorial chops. He will not be stepping in front of the lens for this one.

Stallone is certainly no stranger to the director’s chair, having helmed nine features in his career, including “Staying Alive,” “The Expendables,” and four “Rocky” movies. While some internet commentators might worry about two massive egos clashing on set, a co-directing dynamic between these two Hollywood titans could produce some seriously fascinating television. Plus, Stallone already has his hands full both acting and executive producing the hit Paramount+ crime series, “Tulsa King.”

The Long History Between Quentin Tarantino and Sylvester Stallone

To the casual observer, this collaboration might seem like it came out of nowhere. But die-hard fans know that Tarantino and Stallone have shared a deep, mutual admiration for decades. In fact, this team-up has been a long time coming.

Tarantino has never been shy about his love for the 1976 classic “Rocky,” and he has actively praised Stallone’s 1978 directorial debut, “Paradise Alley.” The mutual respect is very real, but their timing has historically been terrible. Tarantino actually offered Stallone two major acting roles in the past: Louis Gara in “Jackie Brown” (which eventually went to Robert De Niro) and Stuntman Mike in “Death Proof” (which Kurt Russell famously knocked out of the park). Stallone turned both roles down due to creative differences with the parts, but clearly, there is no bad blood between them.

A Six-Part Series Event

Tarantino has been teasing an eight-episode television series since 2022. While this reported 1930s gangster drama is currently billed as a six-part event, it perfectly aligns with his recent ambitions to conquer television. Between Tarantino’s sharp, era-specific writing (which we saw shine in the WWII-era “Inglourious Basterds”) and Stallone’s gritty, working-class sensibilities, this series has the potential to be a monumental television event.

While the internet loves a good Hollywood rumor, this one has enough meat on its bones to make any cinephile sit up and take notice. Casting details are not yet known. Release dates are currently locked away in a Hollywood vault, but we will be keeping a very close eye on this one.
