Welsh Singer Duffy, 41, Shares Harrowing Kidnap and Sexual Assault Story in New Disney+ Doc
Content Warning: This article contains discussions of sexual assault, kidnapping, and suicide ideation.
If you listened to the radio in 2008, it’s very likely you heard the always-soulful voice of Aimée Anne Duffy. Known simply Duffy, the Welsh singer burst onto the scene overnight with her first album, “Rockferry,” which included the catchy single “Mercy.” The retro-voiced singer took the music industry by storm and soon won three Brit Awards for her first effort, as well as an Ivor Novello and a Grammy. Her voice was strong, plaintive and absolutely singular. However, after she released her second album, “Endlessly,” in 2010, the pop star completely disappeared from public view.
Duffy Avoided Fame for a Decade
For nearly ten long years, fans and music critics were left wondering what happened to the charttopper. She finally broke her silence in 2020 in an emotionally-charged Instagram post. Now, after 15 years away from the spotlight, the singer is preparing to share her full story in an upcoming Disney+ documentary.
Why Duffy Disappeared From The Public Eye
The event left a chasm in the music industry. The reality of her disappearance was actually a nightmare behind closed doors. In 2020, the singer shared a brutally honest update for her fans, revealing that she had been the victim of a vicious crime. She disclosed that she had been drugged at a restaurant while celebrating her birthday, abducted and then taken to another country.
During the course of this horrific four-week trauma, Duffy was held captive and subjected to heinous abuse. In a lengthy personal essay published after her initial Instagram post, she detailed how repeated sexual assaults and kidnapping turned her life upside down. She was so devastated by trauma, she became suicidal. She said she needed healing time, to find the sunshine in her heart again, and that the recovery process was incredibly long and isolating. By stepping away from the media spotlight, Duffy prioritized her mental health and survival after suffering an unimaginable and brutal event.
A Brave Return To Share Her Story
It takes an incredible amount of courage and determination to work through such a deep trauma. Disney+ announced a new feature-length documentary – its description promises to give the acclaimed singer a chance to share her experiences in her own words. The commissioned project for Disney+ by Angela Jain and Sean Doyle is described as an “intimate portrait” of Duffy, with “unprecedented access,” chronicling her childhood in Wales to her meteoric rise to global stardom, and to the grisly events that forced her out of the career she loved.
According to BBC, Doyle, the Disney+ Vice President for Unscripted in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said he was a “huge admirer of her courage.” He added that the documentary team is treating her story with the highest sensitivity and care. The film will not only feature the “Mercy” singer herself but will also include both archive of footage and interviews with her family, friends, and close peers within the music industry.
What To Expect From The Disney+ Documentary
While the documentary does not have an official release date yet, it already feels very moving. Gill Callan is directing it, and she examines the tension between being vulnerable and still feeling confident. Callan will illustrate Duffy’s powerfully challenging and ultimately triumphant path to heal herself.
This film is not just about the “Mercy” singer coming back into the spotlight – it’s about taking control of her own story. At this time it’s unclear if she will go back to the studio for new music, but she posted a teaser on TikTok for a remix of “Mercy.”
This was Duffy’s first social media post since 2020. Whether this means she is returning for good, or just dipping her toe in, we’re happy she’s stepping out to share her voice. This will certainly inspire people who have been through similar situations. Survivors everywhere may see it and feel less alone – that’s the healing power of music – and the courage of Duffy.
