‘She Loves Lies Too Much’ gets surprising 45-page new story
“She Loves Lies Too Much” is getting a new 45-page story from creator Kotomi Aoki to mark the manga’s 10-year anniversary. The November issue of Shogakukan’s Cheese! magazine revealed on Sept. 24 that the new work will run in the magazine’s next issue, due out Oct. 23, Anime News Network reported.
The series is known in Japan as “Kanojo wa Uso o Ai Shisugiteru,” and its live-action adaptations were released in English as “The Liar and His Lover.”
What the new “She Loves Lies Too Much” story is
Cheese! hasn’t said whether the new work is a new series or a single new chapter, only that it will fill 45 pages in the issue. Either way, it marks a return to the manga‘s world nearly a decade after Aoki wrapped the original series in February 2017.
The magazine is billing the story as a 10-year anniversary celebration, though the manga first appeared in Cheese! back in 2009.
What “She Loves Lies Too Much” is about
The story follows Aki Ogasawara, a behind-the-scenes songwriter who writes the music for hit band Crude Play and pulls in more than 100 million yen (about US$635,000) a year. He keeps all of that hidden, passing himself off as a NEET, short for “not in education, employment or training.”
Looking for a life that has nothing to do with music, Aki starts dating a high school student named Riko Koeda. What he doesn’t realize is that Riko is a devoted fan of his songs, so music follows him even into his love life.
The manga’s history and adaptations
Aoki’s series ran in Cheese! from 2009 until February 2017, and Shogakukan collected it in 22 volumes. It won the award for best shojo manga at the 59th Shogakukan Manga Awards and had more than 3 million copies in circulation by 2013.
Like many hit manga, it made the jump to live-action adaptations. A film starring Takeru Satoh and Sakurako Ohara opened in Japan in December 2013, and a 10-episode live-action prologue debuted that same month. South Korea’s tvN followed in 2017 with its own drama based on “She Loves Lies Too Much,” starring Lee Hyun-woo and Joy.
Aoki also revisited the series in 2018 with a new chapter created for her art exhibition, which featured work from across her career, including “Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru” and “Niji, Amaete yo.”
More from Kotomi Aoki
Before and after “She Loves Lies Too Much,” Aoki built a long track record at Shogakukan. Her romance manga “Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru” was adapted into an original video anime in 2005 and a live-action film in 2006.
“Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu,” which ran in Shōjo Comic from 2005 to 2008, has 6 million copies in print across 12 volumes and was turned into a live-action film in 2009. Most recently, “Niji, Amaete yo” ran in Cheese! from July 2017 to November 2020, wrapping with its ninth volume.
