Love Hypothesis sequel revealed with exciting 2027 date

Olive and Adam aren’t done yet. Author Ali Hazelwood announced a “Love Hypothesis” sequel on Tuesday, and the timing isn’t a coincidence. The news comes just days after the film adaptation of her bestselling novel “The Love Hypothesis” landed on Prime Video, as first reported by Deadline.

The new novel is titled “The Two-Body Problem,” and it’s set to publish Feb. 2, 2027. MRC is already developing a film adaptation of the sequel for Amazon MGM Studios, meaning this could turn into a franchise rather than a one-and-done movie.

Why the Love Hypothesis sequel exists

Hazelwood said the film adaptation itself is what pulled her back into the world of her two lead characters. In an Instagram announcement, she explained that the movie and its cast made her fall for Adam and Olive “all over again.”

“I wrote a sequel to The Love Hypothesis is not a sentence I thought I’d say a year or so ago,” Hazelwood wrote, according to Just Jared.

That’s a notable dynamic. It’s not every day an author credits a screen adaptation with reigniting her interest in characters she’d already put to rest on the page. Usually the inspiration arrow points the other direction — book first, movie chasing behind it.

What ‘The Two-Body Problem’ covers

The original novel followed Olive, a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford, and Adam Carlsen, a professor, whose fake relationship starts blurring into something real. It’s the kind of fake-dating setup that made the book a hit with romance readers in the first place.

The Love Hypothesis sequel spans a couple of years in the couple’s relationship. The announcement describes it as a mix of everyday moments, postdoc turmoil and what it’s really like to stay together long term. Translation for anyone not deep in academia lingo: the postdoc years come after grad school, when the stakes shift from finishing a degree to figuring out what comes next professionally and personally.

The film connection

“The Love Hypothesis” film premiered Sept. 23 on Prime Video, starring Lili Reinhart as Olive and Tom Bateman as Adam Carlsen. Given that Hazelwood specifically pointed to that cast as her inspiration for the Love Hypothesis sequel, it’s easy to see why fans are already hoping Reinhart and Bateman come back for round two.

Nothing is confirmed yet on that front, and Hazelwood cautioned that “nothing is guaranteed” for the film at this stage. MRC hasn’t named a writer or director for the Love Hypothesis sequel film, and there’s no word on when filming might start.

What to watch for

It’s rare for a film to shape an author’s next book this quickly, with a screen version of the follow-up already in development before the book hits shelves. It suggests Amazon MGM and MRC see staying power in this property beyond a single film.

For now, readers get first crack at the Love Hypothesis sequel when “The Two-Body Problem” publishes in February 2027. Whether the film side keeps pace — and whether Reinhart and Bateman sign back on — are the next big questions. For more on book-to-screen news, visit our books and comics section.
