New “Avatar: The Last Airbender” Film – First Look at the Adult Gaang
Avatar fans have long awaited news on Avatar Studio’s first film, “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender,” which is set to hit Paramount+ on October 9, 2026. Merchandise for the film, which will follow an adult Team Avatar, has given fans their first look at the adult Gaang.
The Adult Gaang

The merch, reportedly now sold out at Target, features images of the adult Gaang, including Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko, along with a man who is rumoured to be the film’s villain, played by Dave Bautista. The merch shows off Team Avatar’s updated looks.
Aang sports a long Airbender cape, similar to the one worn by his son Tenzin in the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” follow-up series, “The Legend of Korra.” Katara’s outfit has been updated to feature a layered look and a yellow sash around her waist that may represent her connection to Aang and the Air Nomads. Sokka’s color palette has notably changed from the traditional Water Tribe blue to a more turquoise or teal color. Toph looks suitably ripped, which fits her tough character and formidable Earthbending style. Finally, Firelord Zuko seems to have gotten the biggest glow-up, sporting flowing royal robes along with his long flowing hair and accents of traditional Fire Nation battle armor.
The villain featured in some of the merch appears to have Airbender tattoos of some kind, adding to his intrigue and mystery.
The Avatar Legacy
No one could have guessed at the time that an ambitious Nickelodeon cartoon would one day become a global phenomenon and one of the most revered television shows ever made. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” aired on Nickelodeon on the 21st of February, 2005, and as of March 14, 2026, it currently sits at #7 on IMDb’s Top 250 Television shows of all time.
The heavily anime-inspired cartoon follows the story of 12-year-old Aang, the Avatar, a powerful being in a world of “benders” who can control one of the four elements: air, water, earth, and fire. The Avatar can control all four elements and is tasked with maintaining balance in a world rocked by conflict. Aang travels the globe with his friends, mastering the elements as he goes, as he prepares to face the world’s greatest threat: The Firelord.
The show is often praised for its lush world inspired by Asian culture, its incredibly well-fleshed-out characters, captivating animation, and perhaps the greatest character redemption arc to ever grace the small screen. Despite being primarily targeted at children, the cartoon deals with heavy topics like genocide, child abuse, and animal cruelty with incredible tact and grace.
The cartoon has since spawned two live-action adaptations: one universally hated movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan and one deeply flawed, but admirable attempt at a live-action series produced by Netflix. Despite some missteps, the original cartoon is still considered one of the greatest journeys ever put to television, and it remains incredibly popular over twenty years after its initial release, hence the new film.
The Future of Avatar

This new iteration has big shoes to fill, and fans are excited to see how the iconic characters function as adults in a changing Avatar world. Not much is known about the film’s plot, nor the film’s villain, who is prominently featured on the merch. Hopefully, as we close in on the release date, more details about the film will come to light.
Season 2 of Netflix’s live-action adaptation will also be premiering this year, and several books and comics are being released in the franchise as well. Twenty years on, and it appears “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is still going strong.
