So far, not much is known about the direction the sequel will take. The film will reportedly focus on expanding the colorful world the first film introduced, deepening the characters’ backstories, and introducing a new supernatural threat. There are also rumors of a fourth Huntr/x member potentially being added to the group.

Kang stated to Netflix, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

Appelhans added, “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”

The Unparalleled Success of “KPop Demon Hunters”

Since its release on Netflix on June 20, 2025, “Kpop Demon Hunters” has continued to rack up accolades. According to Netflix, the Sony Pictures Animation-produced film has garnered more than 500 million views on the streaming platform, and it doesn’t stop there.

“KPop Demon Hunters” walked away with two major Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.” HUNTR/X is also the first K-pop girl group, fictional or otherwise, to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and “Golden” became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy.

Sony Pictures Animation has a lot to be proud of and a lot to look forward to. In the Netflix article, studio presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville stated, “Championing the bold creative visions of our filmmakers is at the heart of everything we do at Sony Pictures Animation. Maggie and Chris brought their incredibly distinct perspectives to this film, telling a story audiences embraced around the globe. We are thrilled to work with them to expand their vision in the next chapter.”

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said of the film’s incredible success, “With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres. We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”

Dan Lin, the Chairman of Netflix Film, stated, “Maggie and Chris were brave enough to take a bold creative swing by telling a story that was both deeply personal and broke cultural barriers. At Netflix, our goal is to make someone’s favorite movie, and they did that by making the most popular Netflix movie of all time! There’s so much more story to tell, and we can’t wait to bring more HUNTR/X to fans everywhere.”

The Film

If you haven’t heard already, “Kpop Demon Hunters” is an animated film that follows fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X, who, surprise, also hunt demons and keep the world safe from demonic encroachment. The three members of HUNTR/X, Rumi, Zoey, and Mira, are tasked with taking down a demon boy band, the Saja Boys, and saving the world from the demon Gwi-Ma.

The film is colorful, funny, and heartfelt, with relatable characters and a wonderful message about accepting yourself. The film also features incredible songs, including HUNTR/X’s magnum opus “Golden” and the Saja Boys’ creepy, but epic villain song, “Your Idol.”

The wait for the sequel will probably be a long one, so fans will continue to revisit the first film as they wait for news of the next one.
