Originally announced on April 12, 2023, a new television series by HBO will be coming to Max. Fans of the books and movies have been on the edge of their seats for nearly 3 years. They dropped the trailer on March 25, 2026, letting everyone know that the series “Harry Potter” season one would be landing around Christmas of 2026 on Max.

The “Harry Potter” franchise is now moving from a feature film series to a full-blown TV series, set to stream on HBO Max, Warner Brothers Discovery’s premier platform for streaming content. While the war wages and paperwork get shuffled, they’re moving forward with bringing Harry Potter to the new generation with a brand new cast. Each season is slated to be based on the movies, expected to run for 8 years. The first season, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is slated for a Christmas-time release in 2026.

The teaser, released March 25, 2026, has many feeling nostalgic as we watch a troubled young Harry played by Dominic McLaughlin, being bullied and tormented by Petunia Dursley, his deceased mother’s sister, before getting tossed into a cupboard under the stairs. Daniel Rigby, playing Uncle Vernon, and Bel Powley, portraying Aunt Petunia, give a bit of a contrast to the movies despite claiming to be true to the original works. Uncle Vernon was originally described as a large, “beefy” man who appeared to have nearly no neck and a large black mustache, but he looks to have slimmed down in the trailer.

The joy of seeing Harry get his wizarding letter and subsequent shot with the friendly animal-loving giant, Rubeus Hagrid, played by Nick Frost, truly looks larger than life as he sits uncomfortably across the aisle from Harry. He certainly looks like standing would be difficult! We even get a sneak peek at Hedwig on the trunk as he runs to catch the train to Hogwarts.

Many are excited to see what the series has in store for old fans and new alike, as we explore the world of Harry Potter once more through the lens of a brand new cast with so much potential. Certainly, the new cast for the twins, Fred and George Weasley, portrayed by real-life twins Tristan and Gabriel Harland, will make many happy until it makes us weep.

Our favorite Potions Master, Alan Rickman, who wanted nothing more than to be the teacher for Defense Against the Dark Arts, sadly passed away in 2016, but is shown wandering the halls looking for misbehaved students, is now played by Paapa Essiedu, a British actor who is of Ghanaian descent. As showcased in the teaser, he certainly has the demeanor with his wand drawn, Lumos active, and looking every bit as determined.

Everyone remembers Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley from the movies being portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, the last movie being “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” released July 15, 2011.

News of our new cast, Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout, was dug up by Deadline and announced on May 27, 2025. Out of 32,000 auditions for 3 of this generation’s biggest roles, these three stood out and exemplified what showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod sought for their new series.

McLaughlin, at the time, was portraying Martin in the series “Gifted,” a series adapted from Marilyn Kaye’s novels. Stanton is a young actress who played the role of Matilda Wormwood throughout Sept. 2024 until March 2024, a West End musical production. Though little is known about Stout, Hindustan Times reports that Stout had played the “son at dinner” in an advert for Albert Bartlett potatoes.

Should You Watch?

This is a question many fans might be debating. After all, the world had the books from 1997-2007, the movies from 2001-2011, we saw everything, right? With 8 episodes per season, there is a good chance we might get sneak peeks at things the movies missed out on. Perhaps we get a glimpse of the poltergeist, the missing potion logic puzzle that had readers on the edge of their seats, and some magic castle weirdness.

Keep your eyes peeled for more updates about the upcoming show; there might be more teasers in store to keep you wanting more. Make sure to check out “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in Dec. around Christmas, which will be streaming on HBO Max.
