Back to Hell’s Kitchen: Exploring Rivalries in “Daredevil Born Again” Season 2
One of Marvel’s greatest rivalries is back in “Daredevil Born Again” Season 2.
Every great hero needs a villain to truly shine. Few other hero/villain relationships explore that dynamic as deeply as Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, as Kingpin’s dreams and views for New York act in perfect opposition to Daredevil’s. They are two men cut from the same cloth, yet with wildly different views and values, fighting over the same space.
After three seasons on Netflix and the MCU’s continuation of the series on Disney+, the two characters reprise their historic rivalry in “Daredevil Born Again” Season 2.
Season 2 Looks To Double Down And Dive Deeper Into Antagonistic Relationship
“Daredevil Born Again” Season 2 picks up right where the first season left off, with Mayor Fisk imposing martial law over New York City. Now, Matt and his allies have their backs against the wall while on the run from Mayor Fisk and his Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Yet this new threat does more than present an obstacle for both characters to grapple with. It forces both men to see more deeply into their antagonistic relationship.
When asked how both characters are more similar than they liked to admit, Showrunner Dario Scardapane and executive producer Sana Amanat broke down the Daredevil/Kingpin relationship in an article with MovieWeb.
“I think that both of them rise to the level of symbols. You have the mayor of New York and his administration. You have Daredevil as the symbol of the resistance. And when you get to that point, affecting change, battling each other, continuing the fight, they really start creeping closer and closer to a moment that happens where they really, for lack of a better term, they see each other, and what they see is more of a reflection than either one would want to admit.”
The Compelling Nature Of Their Relationship At The Heart of Season 2

Amanat further elaborates on the show’s goal to emphasize the specific nature of their conflict as two characters who are forever connected. “They’re constantly entwined and drawn to each other. They both want New York to love them. They both have violent tendencies. The similarities are so intriguing. They cannot exist without each other.”
Ever since their first interaction back in season 1 on Netflix, the conflict between the two men has been one of the series biggest selling points. Yet, what makes this heated rivalry even more impressive is the relatively limited screen time the characters have shared, which is a reality that the showrunners are not only aware of but plan to take advantage of further.
In an article from The Walt Disney Company, Scardapane said:
“If you look at the amount of screen time that Charlie and Vincent have shared over the course of five seasons, it’s minimal; they’ve been in maybe 10 scenes together,” Scardapane said. “You’ve seen their interactions play out in the streets, through the ripple effects, so we were super mindful about building this moment. We provided a springboard for Wilson Fisk, Matt Murdock, Daredevil, and Kingpin to go to places we’ve never seen them go before. We had to top ‘I beat you’ from Season 2. We had to top ‘It’s not entirely unpleasant to see you again’ from Season 1. So, we had to bring our A-game.”

The newest season will take that tension to its highest points yet as both Kingpin and Daredevil become singularly focused on taking the other down.
