Nick Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents in their Los Angeles, California home last year, has formally entered a plea of not guilty to charges. The tragic case has drawn national attention due to the family’s prominence.

Legal Proceedings Advance in Reiner Case

Reiner entered his not guilty plea in a downtown Los Angeles courthouse in front of a sea of media. The double murder case could be a lengthy legal process, a period during which Reiner’s lawyers are expected to put his mental state in question, leading up to and during the murders.

With the not guilty plea, Reiner’s lawyers dealt with what is essentially a legal formality and moved to more discussions of their client’s defense in the future. It isn’t an uncommon thing for lawyers to enter a not guilty plea and then end up modifying it later. Monday’s proceedings were fast, as they were only minutes long.

When the judge asked Reiner if he wanted to waive his right to a speedy trial, he said, “Yes,” which was obtained by the New York Times. His lawyers will have an opportunity to set a preliminary hearing on April 29. However, prosecutors did warn that the hearing could take more time because lawyers must get through the process, sifting through evidence and wait for more facts, like a report from the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner.

Kimberly Greene, Mr. Reiner’s lawyer from the Los Angeles County public defender’s office, did not speak with the news media or provide information about a possible defense strategy. In December, he was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the homicide of his parents, who were found dead in their Brentwood neighborhood residence in Los Angeles.

Victims’ Autopsies Still Not Completed

Prosecutors are still waiting for the full and completed autopsies of the murdered couple. Per prosecutors, they allege that the 32-year-old fatally stabbed his parents on the early morning hours of Dec. 14 in their Los Angeles home before taking off the residence. He could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty if he is convicted.

The couple’s youngest child, daughter Remy Reiner, found her father’s body inside the home, and later, she learned that Michele Reiner had also died. The Los Angeles Fire Department was called to the home around 3:30 p.m. They had tried to provide aid, but the victims were pronounced dead at the fatal scene. The couple died from multiple sharp force injuries hours before in their bedroom.

The couple had been married to each other since 1989, and were parents to son, Jake Reiner. Rob Reiner was previously married to Penny Marshall for 10 years from 1971 to 1981. He had adopted Tracy, Marshall’s daughter, while they were married. Jake and Romy Reiner released a statement, obtained by People.

In the statement, they said, “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”

“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,” the statement continues. “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.” Since his arrest back in Dec. 14, 2025, Mr. Reiner has remained in custody without bail.
