Details on What Happened at The Scene
The caller continued, “She’s got three shots to her and blood everywhere. Ashley, baby, baby, please. Oh my God!” Responding officers found 37-year-old Ashley Flynn dead at the scene inside the couple’s bedroom in their Ohio residence. Caleb Flynn was taken into custody three days later after the murder and was charged with murder, two counts of felonious assault, and two counts of tampering with evidence.
Ashley Flynn was a middle school volleyball coach, and she was also a substitute teacher. The children were also in the home, asleep nearby, when responding officers arrived at the residence. Flynn was a former “American Idol” contestant in 2013. Allegedly, according to court documents, Flynn shot and killed his wife with a 9 mm handgun and staged a crime scene, leading police officers to be led astray.
In a statement that was obtained by CBS affiliate WHIO-TV, Ashley Flynn’s family said, “Our hearts are shattered. Ashley brought endless light to our world, and we are trying to navigate this immense loss. Our family believes this arrest was made carefully and not without serious consideration. After speaking with both local police and federal authorities, we trust the proper steps were taken, and the process is being handled appropriately.”
Caleb Flynn’s LinkedIn page, where there’s a photo of him performing on “American Idol,” indicates that he has worked as a Vice President of Sales for a Tipp City-based commercial flooring company and interior supplier for worship spaces. The company is called Richard D. Smith & Sons. He got his education at Lee University from 2007 to 2010. Flynn’s attorney, Patrick Mulligan, entered a not guilty plea on the former contestant’s behalf and asked for a preliminary hearing to be set for later this month.
Mulligan said that he and his client were troubled by how quickly authorities were filing charges, arguing that the pace of the case suggested that investigators may have reached conclusions before fully developing all leads. Tipp City Police Chief Greg Adkins defended the investigation, arguing that it hadn’t moved quickly and that it was thorough.
