BMW teased the electric BMW M3 while marking a milestone: the 1 millionth M car, a gasoline-powered M3 in Fire Orange III paint, was built at the company’s Munich plant on Oct. 2, BMW Group said. The automaker confirmed the electric M3 will be built at that same factory, though it has not shared power figures or a reveal date.

The 1 millionth M car
The milestone car is an M3 finished in Fire Orange III, a special paint from the BMW Individual program. Peter Weber, head of BMW Group Plant Munich, and Franciscus “Frank” van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, attended the occasion.
Van Meel said the figure shows customers still value the brand’s mix of road and racetrack ability with everyday practicality, 40 years after the first M3 reached the market. The current-generation M3 has been built in Munich since 2020.
What we know about the electric BMW M3
The electric BMW M3 will be the first high-performance model to use BMW M’s version of Neue Klasse technology, the company’s new electric-car platform. It will be the second Neue Klasse model built in Munich, following the electric i3 sedan, which began production there in early 2026.
BMW released camouflaged prototype images of the car from several angles during the celebration, but little else. The company has not disclosed the electric M3’s power output, motor setup, body styles, range or an official debut date.
Munich’s all-electric makeover
BMW is investing about €650 million to convert Plant Munich to electric-only production. The work covers a new body shop, a new vehicle assembly area and updated logistics areas, together about one-third of the plant’s footprint. From 2027, the plant will build only electric vehicles.
The company did not name a specific start date for electric M3 production, so the 2027 date refers to the plant-wide switch rather than the car’s arrival in showrooms. For more auto industry coverage, see our reports on Porsche bringing back a gas-powered Macan and Aston Martin’s first EV delay.
What’s next for the electric BMW M3
BMW has not said when the electric M3 will be revealed, what it will cost or how much power it will make. Those details will determine whether the car can live up to a nameplate that has anchored the brand’s performance image for four decades. Until BMW shares more, the camouflaged images and the Munich investment are the only concrete signs of what is coming.
