Mickey Mouse has specials for all sorts of holidays, especially Christmas, so if you want to try looking up any past Halloween specials similar to Mickey’s Spooky Tales, it might be a tad confusing at first.
He’s a mascot and a character that’s been around for a hundred years, he has been featured in loads of series, all of which were great. It is safe to say, that we can also expect Mickey’s Spooky Tales to be just as the other Halloween specials.
Disney & Mickey Mouse
For a quick summary to ensure everyone is well acquainted, Disney is a company that revolves around creating all sorts of content for families to enjoy together, from media to theme parks and merchandise. The Walt Disney Company we know of today began on October 16th, 1923. Back then, it was named Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio since it was run by Walt and his brother Roy, until later when his brother Roy suggested changing the name to Walt Disney Studio.
Before creating Mickey Mouse, there was Oswald the Rabbit, but after a bit of betrayal, Walt learned that he didn’t own the rights to the character. He designed Mickey Mouse at the Hyperion Studio after ensuring he owned everything he created ever since the Oswald the Rabbit incident. The character originally had two animated cartoons, but they wouldn’t sell due to having no sound, which was all the rage at the time. This is why Steamboat Willie has synchronized sound, and the mouse’s official debut began at the Colony Theater in New York on November 18, 1928.
Halloween’s History
To commemorate and welcome Mickey’s spooky Tales for this Halloween, let’s look at when Halloween began, its original meaning, and how it was originally celebrated. Before the tradition of staying in to watch spooky movies and occasionally getting up to give candy to the trick-or-treaters, there used to be bonfires too, and it used to be on November 1st. Important note to make, this is in no way an implication that Mickey’s Spooky Tales will be giving a story of how Halloween originally was.
This is merely a quick history lesson on the holiday. Originally an ancient Celtic ritual known as Samhain, it was a festival meant to celebrate the seasons changing from light to dark or from summer to winter. The Celtics believed this time to be where the veil between the two worlds, the living and the dead, would be thinnest and had traditions meant as a way of protection. Unlike the costumes of today worn for fun, costumes in the old age were used to ward away evil spirits.
In short, Halloween began in Europe and was brought to America by early settlers. Before using pumpkins, they carved turnips to put candles inside to ward away evil spirits. The first American Halloween story was The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving in 1820, and the Halloween we know today is like this courtesy of candy corporations and Hollywood.
Mickey’s Spooky Tales
The 2024 Mickey’s Spooky Tales, originally called Mickey’s Spooky Stories, will have one season filled with six episodes of Mickey Mouse and his friends, and yes, Mickey’s Spooky Tales is a Television mini-series. You can watch it on either Disney+, Hulu, or IMDB.com, and stream a bunch of premieres and classics. As the title says, throughout the six episodes, Mickey and his friends will be telling Halloween stories around the campfire, which matches how short the Halloween season feels, but we love it, nonetheless.
Conclusion
Mickey’s Spooky Tales will not be released until October 2nd on Disney+. Not much information can be found on it, especially considering that it is a Halloween special mini-series. We know that the characters involved will be Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy.
The only other information we have is that the animation style will be stop motion shorts made by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and Disney Television Animation, showing Mickey and his friends having some Halloween fun. Yes, it is a short series, but it is a welcome one to relax and watch away from all the stress.
