DeLorean Motor Company announced it is entering the Airspeeder International Series as a constructor, fielding the United States team in a championship built around electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, known as eVTOLs. The company made the announcement at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, becoming the first American constructor in the championship’s first international season.
The 2026-27 season opens in November 2026, giving DeLorean a short runway to prepare its debut campaign.
The Details Behind The DeLorean Airspeeder Announcement
For its first season, DeLorean will race the standardized Airspeeder Mk3C aircraft rather than a car-specific design. That means every team on the grid competes in the same base airframe for 2026-27, with DeLorean handling the visual identity of its entry rather than its core engineering.
Cameron Wynne, DeLorean’s chief brand officer, framed the move as the brand finally catching up to decades of public imagination. “People have pictured a DeLorean in the sky for 40 years. We decided it was time to stop picturing it,” Wynne said.
What It Means For Fans And The Grid
For fans who associate DeLorean purely with its automotive history, the announcement marks the company’s first organized push into competitive aviation. Racing the Mk3C in year one keeps the playing field level while DeLorean builds out its program, but the bigger shift comes after this debut season.
Starting with the 2027-28 season, DeLorean plans to develop its own race aircraft rather than continue with the standardized Mk3C. That airframe will be built in collaboration with engineering students from UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech, according to Motor1.
Context On The University Partnership
The partnership with the two universities gives DeLorean access to additional design and analysis resources as it moves toward an in-house airframe. Wynne described the partnership as a way to influence more than just hardware: competing publicly lets DeLorean help shape “the regulatory, safety and compliance frameworks required” for advanced air mobility, alongside the flight technology itself.
The aircraft design, pilot lineup and full sporting program for the debut season are still to be revealed ahead of the November opener, Motor1 reported.
What’s Next
The 2026-27 Airspeeder International Series season begins in November 2026, when DeLorean’s U.S. team will make its competitive debut in the standardized Mk3C. The company’s own race aircraft, developed with UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech, is planned to arrive for the 2027-28 season, though DeLorean has not released a specific timeline for when that airframe will reach the grid.
