Happy Monday! It’s time for your daily devotional. Jesus was the ultimate storyteller, teaching parables to the multitudes by using familiar objects that they could relate to. One of His most famous parables is the Parable of the Sower. The crowd didn’t immediately understand it; Jesus had to explain its meaning. But once you know, you can’t unknow. In today’s daily devotional, Jesus teaches us how not to receive the word of God.

Jesus Began Teaching

In Matthew 13:1, Jesus leaves His house in Capernaum and sits by the seaside, perhaps to relax or take in nature’s beauty. However, He’s not alone for soon multitudes begin to gather and stand on the shore. Jesus’ calling requires Him to teach them. So He sits in a boat and begins teaching, an act of compassion. Sharing your wisdom, knowledge, and insight to benefit others is a magnanimous act of service that makes a great impact. In your daily devotional, see yourself on the seashore as Jesus teaches, making eye contact with you, as you take in truths meant to empower you in the kingdom.

By the Wayside

Verse 3 is where Jesus begins His parable: “And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow.” Jesus paints a picture they’re all familiar with, since they were mainly farmers who sowed and harvested. In this scene, a farmer has gone out to sow seed in his field. Verse 4 says, “some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up.” In today’s daily devotional, Jesus is teaching them that the word of God is like seed planted by a sower. It matters where the seed lands. If it falls by the wayside, it’ll be quickly eaten by birds.

The sower delivers God’s word, which is sown in your heart. If you don’t receive it with an open heart, Satan will come and steal what could have grown, developed, and borne fruit. In this daily devotional, receive the word like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, with “all readiness of mind,” meaning their hearts were open.

Upon Stoney Places

In verse 5, Jesus teaches a second way that the word can be received: “Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth.” Stony ground represents a hard heart that often affects people who’ve experienced trauma, or they doubt or disbelieve.  When seeds aren’t sown much deeper than surface-level, the plant springs up too soon.  Jesus stated in verse 6 that when the sun became hot, “they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.”

The word must be planted deep within you. David proclaimed that he’d hidden God’s word in his heart. In today’s daily devotional, when the word is not deeply rooted in your heart, you’ll rejoice when it’s sown, but as soon as trouble arises, you’ll stop believing it.

Plant God’s Word Deeply in Your Heart

In Monday’s daily devotional, having a receptive heart is required. A former pastor denounced his faith when tragedy struck his family and his wife miscarried three times. He declared he didn’t believe in God anymore. But when the word is planted deeply, you don’t believe Satan’s lies when things aren’t in your favor. He will tell you the word isn’t real or it doesn’t work. In this daily devotional, plant God’s word deeply so that when challenges come, you’ll stand on God’s word sown in your heart.
