Daily Devotional Friday | April 24, 2026
Happy Friday! It’s time for your daily devotional. In the Book of John, Jesus makes two more declarations of “I Am,” applying God’s name to Himself. These aren’t metaphorical statements but proclamations of His deity. He was there when God said, “Let us make man in our image.” In today’s daily devotional, the second person in the godhead is God the Son.
Seed of Abraham
In John 8, the scribes and Pharisees are at their wits’ end trying to trip up Jesus. They deride Him to say something legally wrong to accuse Him. In verse 13, they retort, “Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.” When He speaks of His Father, they reply they’re Abraham’s seed. In verse 24, Jesus rebukes their sin of unbelief, exclaiming that the Son makes free.
Insisting, “Abraham is our Father,” Jesus responds that if they were Abraham’s seed, they would do his works. Jesus tells them plainly that He came from God, but they don’t believe Him. In your daily devotional, Jesus must be received by faith, not as the Pharisees who argued, questioned, and debated.
Jesus is “I AM”

In verses 44 and 47, Jesus exposes their real father, Satan, for they do his works, not hearing God’s word, “because they are not of God.” The Pharisees then accuse Jesus of being a Samaritan and having a devil. As they continue arguing, He continues speaking truth, saying in verse 51, “If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.” Indignant, they accuse Jesus of making Himself greater than Abraham and the prophets who are dead; however, Jesus tells them Abraham rejoiced to see His day.
Considering he’s not yet fifty, they say He can’t have seen Abraham. Jesus proclaims His deity in verse 58: “Before Abraham was, I am.” In this daily devotional, Jesus doesn’t hide His deity. He reveals that He is the Son of God.
He is God
In John 18:3-6, after betraying Jesus, Judas led a band of soldiers to the Garden of Gethsemane to arrest Him. Seeing them stand with torches, lanterns, and weapons, Jesus asks, “Whom seek ye?” When they reply, “Jesus of Nazareth,” Jesus answers, “I am.” In the King James Version, the word he is italicized, meaning it was added by the translators, after “I am,” for clarity.
When Jesus declared, “I Am,” immediately, the soldiers fell backward to the ground. Again, Jesus spoke God’s name to identify Himself, for He is God. In verse 7, He asks them again who they seek, and they repeat themselves. Jesus reaffirms, “I have told you that I am he.” In your daily devotional, Jesus answers as God because He is God.
Unable to Stand
Jesus not only tells them that He is God, but His omnipotence is on display as they fall back, unable to stand before the power that comes from Him. The army of soldiers couldn’t take Jesus by force because they couldn’t even stand in His presence. He went willingly as the Lamb of God. Earlier, the Pharisees asked, “Who art thou?” Yet they were blind to who Jesus was. All signs confirmed He was the Son of God. In today’s daily devotional, just like the scribes and Pharisees, people miss signs that Jesus is exactly who He says He is.
Jesus is Your “I AM”
In Friday’s daily devotional, before they take Jesus away, Peter draws his sword and cuts off one of the soldiers’ ears. Then Jesus performs another miracle before their eyes by reattaching his ear. But they continue to disbelieve. In today’s daily devotional, Jesus has proven Himself to be the “I AM.”
