“Speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15).

This daily devotional for men for Oct. 17, 2026 centers on that short command, one that asks for honesty and love to work together rather than compete. Paul’s words come from a letter urging believers toward maturity, and part of that maturity means refusing to let truth and kindness pull in opposite directions.

What This Verse Means

Honesty, in biblical terms, is more than avoiding outright lies. It is the habit of making accurate, trustworthy statements about life, about other people, about ourselves and about God, according to GotQuestions.org. That standard is higher than most men assume.

It is not enough to avoid saying something false. The call is to actively tell the truth.

Scripture does not treat this as optional or situational. Jeremiah lamented a culture where “everyone deceives his neighbor, and no one speaks the truth” (Jeremiah 9:5), and Proverbs lists “a lying tongue” among the things the Lord hates (Proverbs 6:16-17), according to Desiring God. Truthfulness matters to God because, as GotQuestions.org notes, humankind is not naturally honest. It has to be chosen, over and over.

That choice matters because of who God is. Hebrews 6:18 states plainly that “God cannot lie,” according to GotQuestions.org. A man who commits to honesty is not just following a rule. He is reflecting the character of the God he follows.

Living It Today

Honesty shows up in small, ordinary moments long before it shows up in big ones. It is the accurate answer on the time sheet, the straight answer to a spouse’s question, the honest number given to a boss or a client even when a softer version would be easier to deliver.

GotQuestions.org draws a distinction worth sitting with: a man can be honest without being fully transparent, but he cannot be consistently honest without a real commitment to truth. That means honesty is not about oversharing everything. It is about never letting what you do say be false.

There is a cost to this. Proverbs 27:6 says “wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses,” according to GotQuestions.org, a reminder that honest words sometimes sting more than flattering ones. A man who avoids hard conversations to keep the peace is not loving his friends, family or coworkers well.

He is just avoiding discomfort, and GotQuestions.org calls that kind of dishonesty a form of flattery that never actually helps a relationship. Scripture is also honest about the pull in the other direction. Dishonesty can look profitable in the moment.

Proverbs 20:17 warns that “bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel,” according to Desiring God, and Proverbs 21:6 adds that wealth built on lies is “a fleeting vapor and a snare of death.” Jesus put the stakes in even starker terms, asking, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36), according to GotQuestions.org.

None of this means truth gets used as a weapon. Ephesians 4:15 pairs truth with love for a reason. Jesus himself is described as the Truth, and those who follow him are called to speak that way, with honesty aimed at helping people grow rather than tearing them down, according to GotQuestions.org.

Reflection Questions

Where this week have you softened or shaded the truth to avoid a hard conversation?

Is there someone in your life who needs an honest word from you delivered in love, not anger?

What would change in your work or your home if every statement you made this week had to hold up under scrutiny?

A Prayer For Today

Lord, you cannot lie, and you call me to walk in that same truthfulness. Forgive me for the times I’ve shaded the truth to protect myself or avoid conflict. Give me the courage to speak honestly and the love to speak it gently.

Shape my words today so they build others up instead of tearing them down. Amen.
