Daily Devotional for Men for Oct. 14, 2026

This daily devotional for men explores Hebrews-style community through Scripture, urging believers to encourage and build one another up daily.

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version)

This daily devotional for men centers on a short but pointed command found in Scripture, one that calls believers to look outward rather than inward. The verse does not ask for grand gestures. It asks for encouragement, offered consistently, to the people already in a man’s life.

What This Verse Means

The call to “encourage one another and build one another up” belongs to a much larger pattern in the New Testament. According to GotQuestions.org, the phrase “one another” appears roughly fifty times across the New Testament, describing how Jesus and the apostles instructed Christians to treat each other.

Those commands cover a wide range of actions: caring for one another, bearing with one another, honoring one another, singing to one another, doing good to one another, forgiving one another and loving one another, according to Desiring God. Encouragement is not an isolated instruction. It fits inside a web of relational commands that assume Christians will be in regular contact with each other, not living out their faith alone.

Desiring God put it directly: “True holiness may begin between God and the soul, but it finds full expression in community with other people, other wonderful, glorious, frustrating, and sometimes offensive people.” Faith lived in private has a place, but Scripture repeatedly points toward community as the proving ground for a believer’s character.

Living It Today

Men often default to self-reliance. Work rewards it. Culture praises it. But this daily devotional for men points to a different measure of maturity: how well a man shows up for the people around him.

Desiring God noted that spiritual fruit like patience and peace are not proven in isolation. They are tested and confirmed only through actual interaction with other people, whether that is a coworker who tests patience on a bad day, a friend going through a hard season, or a spouse who needs to be heard rather than fixed.

Philippians 2:3 adds the attitude that makes encouragement genuine rather than performative: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count [one another] more significant than yourselves.” Desiring God described humility as the foundational posture Christians should hold toward each other, one that clears away the selfishness that distorts how people see one another. That humility follows the example of Christ, who moved toward people with welcome and openness instead of retreating from them.

For men juggling careers, family responsibilities and friendships, that means building community does not require perfect people or perfect timing. It requires showing up, offering a word of encouragement, and choosing humility over self-interest in ordinary moments.

Reflection Questions

Who in your life could use a direct word of encouragement this week?

Where has self-reliance kept you from leaning on or investing in other believers?

What would it look like to count someone else’s needs ahead of your own convenience today?

A Prayer For Today

Lord, thank You for the people You have placed around me. Teach me to see them without the distortion of pride or self-interest. Give me the humility to put others first and the courage to speak encouragement when it is needed.

Build in me a heart that values community the way Your Word describes it, not as an obligation but as a place where faith becomes real. In Your name, amen.
