BMW has unveiled the Concept 7 Protection, an armored 7 Series designed to stop handgun rounds while looking ordinary. The concept is based on the M760e xDrive plug-in hybrid, according to Motor1.
What BMW Announced
The M760e xDrive platform underneath the Concept 7 Protection pairs a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 603 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, Motor1 reported.
BMW built the protection into the car without altering its appearance. The windows use bulletproof glass that is substantially thicker than what comes on a standard 7 Series, and the sedan carries an intercom system so occupants can talk to someone outside the car without rolling down a window or opening a door.
“The protection features are discreetly integrated into the vehicle and preserve the prestigious appearance of the luxury sedan,” BMW said, according to Motor1.
The Concept 7 Protection is engineered to meet the new BayB standard, a certification for civilian protection vehicles used in cities that focuses on handgun threats rather than military-grade attacks. BMW rated the car to resist 9×19 millimeter rounds and .44 Magnum cartridges.
What It Means For Buyers
BMW designed the Concept 7 Protection for everyday threats, carjacking attempts, road-rage confrontations, ambushes outside a residence, rather than battlefield conditions, per Motor1.
That puts the car a step below BMW’s existing Protection lineup, which already includes fully hardened vehicles built to VR9 protection level with optional VPAM 10 certification for diplomats and heads of state. The Concept 7 Protection is aimed instead at private and corporate buyers who want factory-backed armor without the extra visual bulk and weight that comes with a diplomatic-grade build.
Background
BMW has sold heavily armored Protection models for years, primarily serving government and diplomatic clients who need the highest certified defense levels. The Concept 7 Protection signals the automaker’s interest in a lighter, more discreet tier of armored vehicle aimed at a broader customer base.
What’s Next
BMW has not confirmed the Concept 7 Protection for production. The company describes it as a concept study, and no pricing or availability timeline has been disclosed.
