Disney and Hyperion are releasing The Blood of Olympus as a graphic novel. The visual adaptation brings Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus finale to readers in a new format.
According to CBR, the Blood of Olympus graphic novel faithfully adapts the text of the fifth and final book in the Heroes of Olympus series, the mega-bestselling saga that concluded Riordan’s mythology universe before later works. The graphic novel recounts the climactic events as the demigods race to stop the earth mother Gaea from waking and destroying both the Greek and Roman camps.
The Blood of Olympus graphic novel plot
According to the official Disney and Hyperion summary, The Blood of Olympus follows the demigods of the Argo II on their final quest. Gaea’s giants have risen and are stronger than ever, and she plans to sacrifice two demigods in Athens during the Feast of Spes to gain their blood, the blood of Olympus, to fully awaken. The crew must decide whether to take the Athena Parthenos statue to Athens as a weapon or return it to Long Island to prevent war between Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter. The gods remain useless due to their split personalities, leaving the young demigods to face Gaea’s army alone.

Context: Percy Jackson’s multiformat push
The graphic novel release comes as the Percy Jackson franchise is expanding across platforms. Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series on Disney+ is heading into its third season on Nov. 20, which will adapt the earlier book The Titan’s Curse, the first time that novel has been adapted for screen. According to Polygon, the show has also begun streaming its first two seasons on Netflix starting Oct. 4 for a three-month promotional window ahead of the season 3 premiere.
The original Percy Jackson films by 20th Century Fox adapted the first two books, The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters. This graphic novel gives the final Heroes of Olympus book a new visual presentation for longtime fans and readers discovering the series through the Disney+ show.
