Velma Cancelled After An Artists Assumption of No 3rd Season

Velma

Velma, the Max original adult animation, has been the source of much controversy. Even before the series premiered on Max, many Scooby-Doo fans were put off by the idea of it. Even the franchise’s adult fans would have loved a family-friendly version of Velma. Then on the show’s premiere, it received awful reviews and didn’t hit with any fanbase. Now, after two seasons, Velma has finally been canceled at Max.

Velma

The show followed the titular character, Velma Dinkley, as she tried to solve the mystery of her classmate’s murder. The show featured a star-studded cast with Mindy Kaling as the voice of Velma, Jane Lynch, and Wanda Sykes. In this series, the gang aren’t exactly friends; most of them either don’t know each other or dislike each other. They also didn’t resemble their original personalities at all.

Shaggy’s reimagined character, Norville was almost the antithesis of his character. Scooby-Doo fans felt that the characters were too unrecognizable for it to be enjoyable. Adult animation viewers thought that Velma tried too hard to be edgy and inappropriate, resulting in a cringe state.

The Lowest Rated Cartoon Ever

Velma has a 1.6/10 rating on IMDB and a 6/10 rating on IGN, summarized as ‘Okay.’ The IGN review describes the series as an “often funny take on the classic Scooby-Doo series with plenty of risque humor. Unfortunately, most of what makes Velma funny is completely unrelated to the character who gets a starring role.” The review cites that most of the humor comes from being unintentionally bad. Mainly from the show’s failed character dynamic between the gang.

Despite this, it was renewed for Season 2, much to the surprise of fans everywhere. Many thought Max was going for the “it’s so bad, it’s good” cult classic formula. It’s essentially a show that is bad on paper and by every technicality that would make a show good. Velma managed to entertain audiences to survive on the air. The reality is they are laughing at how awful it was boosting its view count.

Cancelation at Max

It’s not surprising that Velma was canceled at the streaming service; it’s more surprising that it took so long for the decision to be made. The news was initially revealed by an artist on the show via a social media post, which was quickly taken down. Given that the post was taken down, it could only be assumed that it was posted too early before higher-ups officially announced the show’s cancellation.

On October 9th, Deadline broke the news that Velma had been canceled after two seasons. Eventually, Max released their official statement, “Over the past two seasons, Mindy and Charlie have created an entertaining and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.” So far, none of the cast members have made statements on the cancellation.

Final Thoughts

Velma was a failed opportunity that could have been saved in the second season but was too dedicated to the original intent that no one wanted. Instead of doing something like Fionna and Cake, a more mature spin-off series of Adventure Time, they thought the Scooby-Doo fanbase wanted something downright raunchy and left field. They might have if it was done correctly rather than going for shock value. There’s a lesson to be learned from Velma, a lesson that has shown its value over and over again: listening to audiences is the key to a series’ longevity.
