Oshi No Ko: An Idol Isekai With Dark Secrets

Oshi No Ko

Oshi No Ko is a rare series and a unique anime in its own right. I am not sure I have seen a show that is self-aware of the problems going on across individual industries while being justified to do so. This is specific to the entertainment field in general, and diving into anime, manga, and idols.

The same cultures that make it a great show are the same genres and tropes that have caused suffering in the process. It’s able to accomplish this level of self-reflection within a flowing plot that involves a one-of-a-kind concept in an over-done genre.

Reflected in its various and diverse cast, grand and bright animation, and its appropriate catchy soundtrack, this is a must-watch anime to catch up on if you missed it. This is a spoiler-free review of Oshi No Ko‘s first trend-setting season and its ongoing second season.

Season 1 Focused on the Dark Side of Idol Culture

The first episode, which was an hour long like what Demon Slayer’s done in the past, made waves. The typical high school teen drama had more than meets the eye. It was an Isekai series that had a unique twist, with supernatural and dark elements that dug deep into the entertainment industry.

Oshi No Ko tackles the idol culture in Japan, and while showing both sides, it doesn’t shy away from the hard-hitting downsides of being in an industry like this. This is relatable to any content creator, as the fast track towards fame and fortune eats away at those who try with the wrong intentions.

With a great story and a star-studded cast, it makes sure that backstories are delved into in great detail. The plot involves a teen idol, Ai Hoshino, and a gynecologist but mega fan Gorou Amemiya. It bears at least one similarity to another anime airing this summer, Suicide Squad Isekai.

Season 2 Shows Manga Industry’s Unsustainability

Its sequel season for Oshi No Ko has been about the manga industry, specifically what it means to be a mangaka or author. It continues from season one’s ending and goes right into a revenge plot involving a play to solve the mystery. It dropped its first episode on July 3rd with a colorful trailer on YouTube.

Aqua takes the steps to find the killer within the theater troupe he joins with his twin sister, Ruby, as each move is closer to knowing the truth about what happened. This famous theatre group introduces new characters, as it shows some behind-the-scenes acting.

This includes how source material for anime is adapted, and how the lack of communication in a game of telephone from one side to the other ultimately delays or butchers the process of making a faithful product. The realism and willingness to go where shows don’t is something I commend this series for.

Where to Watch Oshi No Ko

The 11-episode first season of Oshi No Ko exploded last year, with English titles translated called “My Favorite Idol” and “Their Idol’s Children”. Its highly decorated first season is available to purchase on Apple TV and Amazon, as it won anime awards for its debut, according to Anime News Network.

Season one is also available to stream on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video like many iconic anime, including Parasyte: The Maxim. With such high expectations from manga fans as a hit series, it is one of the most-watched anime for the Summer of 2024 anime season for its sequel season.

The current season, slated for 13 episodes, is only available for streaming exclusively on HIDIVE simulcast in the United States. Releasing weekly episodes on Wednesdays, Oshi No Ko is on its third episode and should be a contender for Anime of the Year again, like its first season in 2023.
