The Tomb Raider Animated Series Set To Air On October 10th

After waiting six years since the last Tomb Raider game, and three years after its announcement of being picked up, we’ve finally heard something and it’s great news! Netflix has finally unveiled a new Tomb Raider animated series that will be released on October 10th, 2024.

Following the success of the Tomb Raider “Survivor” trilogy reboots of 2013 through 2018, it was only a matter of time before Laura Croft would grace our screens again with another wild adventure. Taken place after the last game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the series intends to bridge the gap between the original series of games and its rebooted trilogy.

One More Great Adventure for Laura Croft

After the events of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, British archeologist Lara Croft has dedicated her life to pursuing lost artifacts all across the world.

However, her journey hits a brick wall when she discovers that a thief, who shares a personal connection, has stolen a powerful Chinese artifact from Croft Manor forcing her to return home. In order to gain back the Chinese artifact and save the world, Croft will have to confront the thief as well as herself, to become the hero she will be known for.

The Backlash Surrounding the “Anime”

Despite the excitement around the animated series, anime fans have found one glaring issue with the Tomb Raider animated series that doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon. So, what’s the fans’ problem with the series? Quite simply, is the Tomb Raider animated series, really, an anime? For some, anime is a medium created and influenced by Japanese culture. Just stamping “anime” on an animated show doesn’t make said show anime.

No, it’s just a cartoon influenced by a Japanese style, which provides a better description of the show. With Netflix’s new trend of remaking popular live-action shows into animation and vice versa, the arguments around what we should call “anime” will only get louder. Unfortunately for Netflix, only time will tell if these online wars will drown out excitement for the Tomb Raider animated series.

Behind the Tomb Raider Animated Series

As of now, The new Tomb Raider animated series is reported to have two seasons on Netflix with Powerhouse Animation providing the animation. In addition to Powerhouse Animation, the Tomb Raider animated series will be produced by Crystal Dynamics, DJ2 Entertainment, Legendary Television, and Tractorpants.

Furthermore, Tasha Hao will be the showrunner working alongside Stephan Begaj, Jared Robinson, Dmitri M. Johnson, and Howard Bliss as executive producers. Oh, and what else? Hayley Atwell was introduced to voice Lara Croft. Best known as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hayley Atwell makes a great casting choice to play the heroin with Tomb Raider fans praising Netflix for its casting decision.
