Airbnb Checkout Chores Ban Has Hosts Fighting Over Dishes

Airbnb will stop hosts from demanding guests do major cleaning work before checkout under a new house rules policy taking effect Nov. 20, 2026.

Airbnb will stop hosts from demanding guests do major cleaning work before checkout under a new house rules policy taking effect Nov. 20, 2026. The policy applies to reservations booked on or after that date and generally bars hosts from asking guests to wash and put away dishes, strip beds or take trash off the property, according to The Verge.

Airbnb announced the change Tuesday in an email to hosts titled “Important Changes to House Rules,” Skift reported. Airbnb has spent recent years nudging hosts away from many of these requests, and the new policy puts that guidance in writing with enforcement attached. Hosts will choose from seven standard house rules and can still add requests of their own, as long as those requests are reasonable.

What the Airbnb Checkout Chores Policy Bans

The core rule bars hosts from asking guests to complete tasks that require significant effort or time, or that would typically fall to a cleaner, according to The Verge. That rules out full dishwashing duty, bed stripping and hauling trash off the property as standard checkout requirements.

Hosts still have some room to ask for basic tidiness. They can request that guests place dirty dishes in the sink, gather used towels and sort garbage and recycling into the bins provided, according to Airbnb’s policy. Airbnb carved out exceptions for unusual circumstances too, such as hosts in bear country asking guests to secure trash in animal-proof containers. USA Today reported that hosts may also ask guests to limit shower time during droughts.

What It Means for Guests

Travelers booking stays on or after Nov. 20 should see fewer lengthy checkout lists taped to the refrigerator or texted the morning of departure. Listings now feature a “rules and requests” section that puts a host’s expectations front and center before guests book, The Verge reported. Hosts who keep chore requests in a listing once the policy takes effect could get an “includes cleaning requests” label that guests can see.

Hosts also cannot work around the rule by slipping extra instructions into guest messages, posting handwritten signs around the property or giving directions in person. Every rule and request has to appear in the listing when the guest books. Skift noted that hosts also lose the ability to tack on fees for features already included in the listing price or to fine guests for breaking rules. Instead, Airbnb points hosts to its AirCover program for property damage.

Background on the Policy Change

The update arrives a few months after a Georgia host couple went viral on TikTok for filming post-checkout inspections and calling out guests over misplaced pillows, moved furniture and leftover food. Their strict house rules drew widespread ridicule online, USA Today reported. An Airbnb spokesperson told Inc. that hosts had found house rules “confusing, onerous and hard to manage.”

Not every host has welcomed the change. By Wednesday afternoon, roughly a dozen hosts had posted objections in Airbnb’s community forum, and the dishes rule drew the most heat, according to Skift. On the same forums, some hosts warned that dropping chores like dishwashing creates health risks and argued that guests who don’t like strict rules are free to stay somewhere else, The Verge reported. Two hosts in France told Skift they may leave the platform altogether.

Not all hosts are opposed. A Quebec City property manager told Skift that adapting to platform policy changes is simply part of running rentals professionally, even when it means more work behind the scenes.

What’s Next for Hosts and Guests

Airbnb said hosts who repeatedly violate the new policy could face a notice on their listing, lower visibility in search results or other enforcement under its terms of service, Skift reported. Those actions can include canceled bookings, loss of Superhost or Guest Favorite status, or account suspension.

The policy takes effect for any reservation booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026. Bookings made before that date keep the house rules that were on the listing when the guest booked. Travelers can check a listing’s rules and requests section ahead of booking to see what a host still expects at checkout.
