NBCUniversal Formats has acquired international distribution rights to the Japanese game show Action Arena, marking the first time the long-running hit will be shopped outside Japan. The company will feature the format in its catalog at MIPCOM, the television content market held in Cannes.

Action Arena premiered in 1994 and ran for 17 years, producing more than 800 episodes and specials. The show, produced by Tokyo Broadcasting System, was consistently one of the most-watched programs in its time slot during its original run.

What Action Arena Is And How It Works

The format puts contestants and celebrities through physical and mental tests that demand sharp thinking, group coordination and quick reactions. That blend of big, visual games and competitive camaraderie became a signature of Japanese game-show exports, and NBCUniversal is betting it will travel well.

Linfield Ng, NBCUniversal Formats’ vice president of format sales and production, said the acquisition builds on a format with staying power. “Action Arena has an incredible legacy in Japan, and we’re excited to be working with TBS to introduce the format to the international market for the first time,” Ng said. “Its mix of big, visual games, humor and teamwork makes it fun, instantly accessible and highly adaptable for audiences around the world.” The deal was announced ahead of MIPCOM, the annual television market held in Cannes.

A Format That Never Really Left

Although the original series ended more than 15 years ago, Action Arena’s games never disappeared from Japanese screens, according to Deadline. The format has been revived through specials, including Tokyo Friend Park installments running since 2024 that feature J-pop group Snow Man’s variety show, Sore Snow Man ni Yarasete Kudasai. That continued presence gives NBCUniversal a built-in case for the format’s durability as it pitches broadcasters elsewhere.

Why The International Push Matters

Japanese format creators have a track record of turning domestic hits into global franchises. Ninja Warrior and LOL: Last One Laughing both originated from Japanese producers before spreading internationally, and LOL is currently performing well for Prime Video across multiple territories. NBCUniversal’s move to shop Action Arena follows that same playbook, positioning the decades-old game show as the next Japanese format with potential for local adaptations.

What’s Next

NBCUniversal Formats will present Action Arena to international buyers at MIPCOM, where distributors and broadcasters negotiate format and content deals. No specific adaptations, territories or broadcast partners have been announced yet, but the format’s debut in the NBCUniversal catalog signals the start of its first push beyond Japan.
