New Wolverine Trademark Filing Fuels Talk Of New Solo MCU Movie

New trademark filing has fans wondering if a new Wolverine movie is coming to the MCU

For years, Wolverine has been a fan-favorite character for Marvel on the big screen. A recent trademark filing by Marvel Characters, Inc. has reignited fervent speculation within the fan community that a standalone Wolverine project may be in development, separate from the broader introduction of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Details of the New Wolverine-Based Filing

The trademark application, filed on December 12, 2025, covers “WOLVERINE” specifically for use in motion pictures, television programs, and multimedia entertainment. While major studios frequently file trademarks to protect their intellectual property, the timing and specificity of this application have caught the attention of industry observers.

With Marvel Studios currently deep in the production of its upcoming slate, including Avengers: Doomsday, this move suggests a deliberate effort to secure the title for a specific upcoming production rather than just general merchandise or comic book rights.

A Solo Path for the Mutant Icon?

The filing supports ongoing rumors that Marvel may be planning to treat Wolverine differently than the rest of the X-Men. Unlike the ensemble approach traditionally used for the mutant team, insiders suggest that Marvel could be developing a solo vehicle for the clawed hero.

This strategy mirrors the successful model used by 20th Century Fox, which produced a trilogy of standalone films based on the character alongside the main X-Men saga. By separating Logan from the core team initially, Marvel could capitalize on the character’s immense individual popularity while building anticipation for an eventual team-up.

The Hugh Jackman Factor

A central question surrounding any Wolverine project is who will don the adamantium claws. Following the massive global success of Deadpool & Wolverine, reports indicate that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is keen to keep Hugh Jackman in the role for as long as possible.

Jackman’s return to the character was met with critical and commercial acclaim, proving that audiences are far from tired of his portrayal. This trademark filing aligns with the theory that Marvel wants the flexibility to continue exploring Jackman’s iteration of the character, possibly leading to rumored showdowns with other MCU heavyweights like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.

Casting Rumors Persist

Despite the desire to retain Jackman, Marvel is known for its long-term planning, and rumors of a new actor eventually taking up the mantle persist. Speculation has recently swirled around Henry Cavill, with some insiders claiming the former Superman actor has had discussions with Marvel about the role.

Whether this trademark signals a direct sequel to Deadpool & Wolverine, a new solo adventure for Jackman, or the introduction of a variant played by a new actor, one thing is clear: Marvel has big plans for Wolverine, and they are taking the legal steps to ensure the character remains a central pillar of their cinematic future.
