Why Classic Animations Still Resonate

Despite the rise of CGI, the concept of classic animation still holds great appeal for many people across a wide variety of animated shows today. One would think CGI would begin to kill off this animation style, but it is still very much going strong, and there is no sign of the style slowing down or diminishing in popularity.

Why Classic Animation Still Matters

Some of the popularity of classic animation can be explained by nostalgia. People who grew up with these classic animations are familiar with them, and people like what is familiar, even if it’s also old and arguably outdated compared to modern designs and technologies. While nostalgia for the animation style they grew up on can explain some of it, that explanation doesn’t fly for people who weren’t raised on these styles.

Another factor worth considering is the timeless simplicity inherent in certain art styles. Classic art is also extremely easy to learn, which makes it popular amongst new artists and animators still learning their craft. Thus, the style will inevitably see greater popularity with studios employing a large percentage of new artists or interns and with solo films, as these styles are an excellent place to start mastering the craft.

Too Much CGI

One drawback of the rise in CGI over classic animation is that some films overuse their CGI effects to the point that that particular piece of media becomes more of a showcase of their skills at using CGI than a piece of entertainment because they used so much that it becomes overwhelming.

Star Wars Episode I suffered from this to some degree and had so much CGI that some people started to criticize the blatant use of it to the point where this became obvious and detrimental to the film. When they reach this point, the problem is that CGI is often used as a mask because the movie isn’t very good, but the producers hope to disguise it with flash special effects.

Final Thoughts

Despite living in a world where CGI dominates many modern films and shows, classic animation still stands out, and many fans prefer it over the alternative for various reasons. Nostalgia plays a part in the preference for the classics but doesn’t exclusively explain this, and you must look at other factors to explain this fully. One of the most significant factors is the tendency of some big-budget movies to overuse CGI to the point where it becomes a distraction from the movie and makes the experience more about it than the actual film or show you are watching.

Comparatively speaking, classic animation is usually much more subtle and will rarely be so overdone as to distract from the medium it’s being used in. Furthermore, some animation styles are timeless, and there will always be something about a simple art style with less going on that makes people gravitate to it above a style where everything is generated and applied using computers.
