Loving Reaper: Raising Awareness For An Important Group
Loving Reaper is not a typical comic. Comics are generally read for a sense of adventure. One can see the hero’s journey with evil eventually being felled. That is until the evil rises again. Some comics are read for a sense of romance. Two star-crossed lovers meet each other by chance. Will the planets align in such a way for the two to come together?
Other comics wish to raise awareness for some social issues. These comics bring these subjects to the reader’s attention and encourage action. While not a social issue, per se, this is the purpose behind Jenny Jinyaโs Loving Reaper. She wishes to call attention to the plight of pets.
Loving Reaper is Quite Depressing
This is Jinyaโs description of Loving Reaper. When reading Loving Reaper, the reader should prepare for an emotional rollercoaster. The comic tackles subjects such as animal abandonment, pet death, animals in shelters, and others. A few comics will bring a smile to oneโs face such as โWOAH!โ. Life and Death discuss the positives of Deathโs job. He claims animals having a โWOAH!โ moment brings joy to his job. Death does so by pointing out that the spirit of kiwis, while flightless on earth, now float. Cats, on the other hand, are disappointed with their inability to knock over objects.
Some comics like Good Boy will have you smiling through the tears but the laughs are few and far between. One comic titled โWAIT!โ tackles leaving oneโs pet in a vehicle during warmer times of the year. A puppy is left in a hot SUV in the summer and perishes.ย The puppyโs spirit, freed from the confines of the vehicle sees their owner enter the SUV and leave. The puppyโs only thought is to wait for its โfriendโ to return.
Jenny Jinya has a way of tugging at the readerโs heartstrings through her art and writing. She makes the readerโs sympathy come easily with the plight of each animal. Do not be surprised if tears are shed towards the end of each comic. Jinyaโs purpose is not to toy with oneโs emotions. There is a purpose behind her work.
A Comic for a Cause
Helping Hands Humane Society reports that eight to twelve million dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens are euthanized yearly. Puppy and kitten mills impregnate female animals until the animal is unprofitable. These creatures are simply killed by their cruel owners. When the temperature outside is 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the inside of a vehicle can get as hot as 109 degrees inside after twenty minutes. Her comics help raise awareness of these subjects.
The last panel of every article discusses the subject matter and how it affects animals. This panel is a โcall to actionโ for her readers to do more than sympathize with the poor creatures in her comics. She calls her readers to help those animals who are alive and need help.
Jenny Jinya does not simply ask others to take action. She also leads by example. Her website features a Patreon where subscribers can donate in several different tiers, ranging from a $1 to $50 monthly donation. Every month she donates a portion of the proceeds to an animal shelter and subscribers can suggest which shelter receives the donation. Every month Jinya posts a transaction screen to show where the money went.
How Can One Help?
In honor of her work, here is how readers can help those she brings attention to in her comics. Adopt your next pet from an animal shelter. Do not just focus on puppies or kittens. An adult will bring just as much joy in your life. The personality of said pet will already be known. The animal has been given top-notch care while in the facility and staff is usually more than willing to help if there is an issue.
Stop using animal mills to receive pets. Adult animals are killed or abandoned when no longer useful to the mill owners. Conditions are often so unsanitary animals suffer from a variety of health issues which are not tended to until some family unwittingly adopt the animal. This creates unforeseen costs for the family and possible heartbreak for the pet who may be abandoned or placed in a shelter.
Donate your time to shelters. Facilities need help from volunteers. This may be helping walk animals, fostering until someone is willing to adopt, or even working on-site. The help will be appreciated by humans and animals alike. If you do not have time, a monetary donation will help the non-profit shelters to continue running and caring for these wonderful creatures.
The Grim Reaper is often presented as a cold, indiscriminate entity that ends life without remorse. Death, in Loving Reaper, helps raise awareness about a subject that desperately needs attention. But, as every PSA in GI Joe would point out, โKnowing is half of the battle.โ May we be moved to do more than read her comics, shed a tear or two, and move on with our lives.
