Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) is a Refreshing Take

Spider-Man

Spider-Man is one of my favorite fictional characters. Many people would agree with me on that claim. He is easily Marvel’s most popular character and has been since his release in 1962. In the time since, he has seen himself in a wide array of different media interpretations. Spider-Man has had comic books, television shows, movies, video games—he has had it all. The real question is, what hasn’t he been a part of?

He’s the company mascot at this point. And that’s crazy to think about because his main series comics lately have been… rough, to say the least. It’s an entirely separate article, but the main Spider-Man comic run has been very hit or miss ever since 2007 for various reasons. A lot of these reasons stem from the editors not letting Peter Parker grow and mature as a character and wanting to stay in the status quo. Ultimate Spider-Man, a new rebooted series for this year, says no to all that and does its own thing, and it is incredible, to say the least.

Ultimate Spider-Man’s Peter Parker has a Family

Why is this series so great? Well first off like I said, it’s a new rebooted series, set in its own universe. Peter Parker actually tied the knot with Mary Jane and they have their own family! It’s so satisfying to actually see this for so many reasons. In the comics ever since the 80s, Pete and MJ were married, but that marriage was undone in a very complex and stupid way two and a half decades later.

In this new universe, Peter is finally all grown up. He has a full-time job as a news reporter for the Daily Bugle, working alongside J Jonah Jameson and his Uncle Ben who’s alive in this world. Crazy right? He has MJ as his wife, and two kids, Richard and May Parker. This is so refreshing since Peter and MJ having kids has been teased in the main comics since the 90s. Finally seeing a world where this all happened feels like a dream.

Ultimate Spider-Man is New to the Job

What makes this new series feel so fresh is the fact that Peter got his Spider-Man powers as an adult. Usually, the spider bites Peter when he is a kid at the young age of 15. That’s what makes the character of Spider-Man so appealing. It’s a superhero coming-of-age story. It’s always really inspiring stuff. In Ultimate Spider-Man now, Peter got his powers as an adult in his thirties.

That really changes a lot. Peter is a fully matured man by the time he got bit by the spider, so it’s interesting to see how Peter as an adult would deal with the superhero life. In the main comics, he’s been Spidey for so long, that it’s hard to remember how long Pete hasn’t had powers. Now, it’s a brand new thing for the character. Seeing how this rookie superhero traverses things like his personal and work life, with his newfound superhero abilities is such a treat.

Ultimate Spider-Man’s New Universe is Exciting

Overall, this brand-new universe is so exhilarating and unique. The cast of characters and writing is just A-list. Jonathan Hickman is a master at his craft, and artist Marco Chechhetto is brilliant. This new universe has so many subtle differences to the main one. In this one, Aunt May died instead of Uncle Ben. Seeing a version of Uncle Ben who is best friends with J Jonah Jameson, who is kind of a nice, chill guy in this world, is such a refreshing take.

I have a friend who hates Spider-Man, but he reads this book. It’s that good. Let’s not get into why he hates Spider-Man because I don’t get it, but whatever. This new series is only a couple of issues in, so it’s in its infancy, but still, the potential here is incredible. Ultimate Spider-Man’s reboot is a great comic that outshines the main run, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
