Tyreek Hill Detained By Officers
Football player Tyreek Hill, who has a history of legal troubles, had an altercation with the local police hours before his NFL game. Hill was heading to the opening game when the Miami-Dade Police pulled him over. The events that followed left him shocked. “I’m still kind of shell-shocked from it,” Hill told CNN. “I’m embarrassed.”
The police released bodycam footage after the incident went viral; the footage revealed that an officer knocked on Hill’s window and asked him to roll it down. Hill complied and gave the officer his license. The officer asked why Tyreek Hill wasn’t wearing his seatbelt. Hill requested the officer to stop knocking on his window. “Give me my ticket bro so I can go, I’m going to be late. Do what you must do,” the NFL star said before rolling up his darkly tinted windows again. The officer kept knocking and asking Hill to roll his windows down. Eventually, Hill responded, asking the officer not to tell him what to do.
The officer threatened and then ordered the 30-year-old to get out of the car immediately. Another officer opened the car door and pulled Hill out by his arm. Both officers then pushed the football wide receiver to the ground and handcuffed him. Another officer kept his knee on Hill’s back. An officer was heard saying, “When we tell you to do something, you do it. You understand? You understand? Not what you want, but what we tell you. You’re a little f**cking confused.” The footage also showed Hill telling the officers he just got knee surgery.
Hill Responds To The Situation
Tyreek Hill confessed that he was confused about how fast the situation escalated. “One minute I was driving, the next I was on the ground,” he shared. “It all happened so fast. I didn’t even have time to think.” He added that he was a bit slow because of his injuries. “I was following rules, I wasn’t moving fast because you know I got injuries, I got things that I go through. I play a physical sport, I’ve been doing this for a moment now man so I’m dealing with some stuff, so I guess the officers, they felt like I wasn’t doing it on their timing.”
Tyreek Hill explained that he didn’t open his window to avoid drawing attention. “If I let my window down, people walking by, driving by, they’re going to notice that it’s me and they’re going to start taking pictures.” He also expounded on his quote about having a different outcome if he wasn’t Tyreek Hill. “If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, worst-case scenario, we would’ve had a different article. ‘Tyreek Hill got shot in front of Hard Rock Stadium,’ that’s worst-case scenario,” he said.
The Police React To Hill’s Detention
The police director revealed that she had opened an investigation into the incident. She also disclosed that one of the officers was dispatched to administrative duties. Meanwhile, the local police union responded to Tyreek Hill’s claims and claimed their officers reacted accordingly. Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, said Hill was “uncooperative.” He said the union supported the officers’ actions but would await the result of the investigation.
The Miami Dolphins also responded to the incident with a statement on X, formerly Twitter. The team condemned “the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed toward Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell, and Jonnu Smith by police officers.” Campbell was arrested when he and Smith met and stood with Hill while he was detained. The statement mentioned that the team has a good relationship with most of the force; nevertheless, it criticized the high-handed way the police treated Hill.
